POSITION SUMMARY: The Vice President Communications will develop and execute a comprehensive internal and external communications strategy that creates awareness and preference for Republic Services, Inc. while enhancing and protecting the company’s reputation among key constituencies. He/She will advise the Republic executive team on key communication issues and will lead strategic communications programs that support Republic’s commitments to its employees, customers, communities and other key stakeholders. This leader will be responsible for strategy and execution of internal communications, external communications, charitable giving and corporate events.
The primary goal of this job is to strengthen our position as an Environmental Services Leader across all key stakeholders. Working in a matrixed environment, this individual will lead a high-performing Communications organization, building strong relationships with business and community leaders to deliver strategic, high-value communications, charitable community impact and events programs. The position also requires effectively advising senior management on the implications of decisions and events, anticipating and expertly handling current and emerging issues that affect the company’s image among customers, employees, neighbors, shareholders, the investment community, business partners, public sector thought leaders, regulators and the public.
PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Sets strategy and drives execution for internal communications, external communications, charitable giving and corporate events. Ensures plans, programs and messages are coordinated and advances Republic’s overall business goals and objectives.
- Serves as chief company spokesperson and communications counselor to the CEO and senior management, providing proactive and strategic issues management guidance and leading Republic’s response in high-stakes matters that could impact Republic’s interest.
- Drives public relations strategies and tactics that support corporate-related areas, such as corporate image, brand management, reputation management, media relations, etc.
- Oversees the development of a philanthropic foundation for corporate giving. Establishes strategic alliances for corporate giving to support the community and positions Republic as a key participant in the philanthropic community.
- Leads the development of issues management as well as crisis planning and implementation. Keeps the CEO and CMO advised on all issues affecting the brand and company’s reputation.
- Works with internal marketing partners to send clear brand messaging across all marketing and communications channels.
- Prepares and produces annual Sustainability Report.
- Working in close coordination with Investor Relations, prepares annual report, quarterly earnings reports and Annual Meeting. Advises leadership team on primary messaging.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Minimum 15 years of progressive leadership experience in public relations and community relations. Experience with government affairs and investor relations. Marketing experience is a definite plus.
- Strong track record of strategic decision-making and execution that drives business outcomes.
- Demonstrated record of success within a company or organization that has gone through significant cultural change and implemented a successful change management program.
- Experience in producing an Annual Report and Sustainability Report.
- Demonstrated ability to create and oversee large corporate meetings and events.
- Proven ability to work cooperatively and collaboratively with others across business units, functional department, geographies and disciplines.
- Experience working collaboratively with communities, trade associations, environmental groups, government agencies, not-for-profit organizations and the media.
- Ability to effectively create and nurture relationships with external stakeholders including media contacts and government officials.
