What are the responsibilities and job description for the Cable Technician II position at REV?
JOB SUMMARY: The Cable Technician II is responsible for installing, splicing, and troubleshooting all fiber and copper cables for Phone, data and tv. This position also performs all maintenance of fiber and copper for the outside plant. The Cable Technician II reports to Cable Maintenance Supervisor.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES, FUNCTIONS & KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES: (include but are not limited to)
- Knowledge to locate copper and fiber cables
- Performs maintenance of all cables in outside plant, trouble shooting of single trouble reports
- Splices all fiber and copper cables for new orders
- Installation of fiber splitters
- Ability to drive bucket trucks in safe manner which allows Cable Technician to perform pole transfers
- Makes necessary tests for toxic and explosive gas before entering manholes and continue tests while active work in progress
- Helps with regrades for road moves and rearrangement of copper and fiber facilities
- Installs aerial terminals for new installs
- Uses OTDR to assist in trouble shooting method and fiber restoration
- Constructs proper splice cases pressurized and non-pressurized, using all types and sizes of cables, including bonding, grounding, isolation, slack storage and sealing.
- Identifies and diagnoses issues to ensure achievement goals
- Knowledge of operating characteristics of all cable systems in service
- Operates all copper and fiber meters related to installation and repair of facilities (OTDR, Visual Fault, Power meter, 735 Dynatel, Digital ohm/volt, Sidekick)
- On call rotation responding and restoring service for emergency calls, responsible for being on the job at short notice to repair damaged cables until service is restored
KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS:
- Hand and finger dexterity to use tools and equipment
- Must have average computer skills and ability to learn internal operating systems
- Must be able to work with internal customers and employees of organization
- Understand basic principles of electricity
- Strong organizational and communication skills required

QUALIFICATIONS & PREREQUISITES
Required:
- Minimum of 3 to 5 years’ experience in outside plant cables
- Must have a valid Class “D” driver’s license
- Must have clean driving record
- Must be able to perceive difference in wire and color codes
- Must be able to carry twenty-eight (28’) extension ladder weighing 80 lbs.
Preferred:
- High School Diploma or Equivalent
- Knowledge of Telephony cables
