What are the responsibilities and job description for the Lumber Yard Foreman position at RP Lumber?
This position is responsible for supervising all activities of yard and warehouses, including personnel and equipment, as well as receiving, stocking, pulling, loading and delivery of merchandise (lumber & building supplies) to maintain proper control of inventory. Individual will be responsible for ensuring yard personnel provide prompt and courteous service to customers and professional contractors along with maintaining a safe, clean and well organized lumber yard.
Responsibilities of Position
- Unload or oversee the unloading of incoming merchandise and proper storage of merchandise in lumberyard and warehouses. Check delivery tickets against purchase orders to ensure that merchandise is correct by Customer, type of product and quantities. Notifies Store Manager of shortages or damage of incoming merchandise when applicable.
- Directs workers in loading, unloading and movement of materials in the yard utilizing material handling equipment and machinery; oversees receiving of yard materials and instructs yard workers in receiving and storage procedures (i.e., stocking, facing, straightening, and cleaning or any other task necessary to maintain appearance of products within lumberyard).
- Accurately build loads and prepare materials for delivery before delivery takes place.
- Inspects loading operations for outgoing delivery to ensure compliance with shipping specifications, load limits and safety regulations; prepares and reconciles bills of lading and packing slips.
- Greet and assist customers or professional contractors in a friendly manner upon entry into the lumberyard.
- Load materials into customers' vehicles or on to company delivery vehicles, after validating type and quantity based on the record of the transaction from the company's point-of-sale system.
- Evaluate returned merchandise from customers or professional contractors for proper disposition (resale, salvage, etc.)
- Responsible for ensuring the yard area and warehouses are maintained, organized, and stocked in accordance with Company standards (i.e., work and customer areas are clear of trash, weeds, or other obstacles to allow for a safe and clean work environment).
- Provides on-the-job training to new yard employees including product knowledge of items stored in yard and warehouse and housekeeping and safety procedures.
- Complete required inspections and forms to comply with the Company’s Fleet Maintenance Program.
- Ensure compliance with Company operational safety and security policies and procedures.
- Perform any other assigned job duties, responsibilities or tasks as requested by the Store Manager.
Required Skills
- Knowledge of building materials, applications, related equipment, and/or construction industry is required.
- Administrative skills including assigning work assignments, discipline, evaluating, planning, supervision and training.
- Strong communication skills (verbal and written) when dealing with vendors, customers, management, and team members.
- Knowledge of basic math, counting and estimating.
- Ability to apply common sense understanding and carry out simple one or two-step instructions.
- Ability to provide professional customer service and work in a team-oriented environment.
- Must be able to work both indoors and outdoors under adverse weather conditions.
- The physical demands of the position requires an individual to have the ability to bend, reach with hands and arms, climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, and be able to frequently lift and/or move between 50 - 100 pounds.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or general education degree (GED).
- 2-years of experience as Yard Foreman with a lumber company or equivalent experience in similar field.
- Highly organized with a strong attention to detail.
- Flexibility to successfully multi-task in a fast paced environment, working with multiple team members.
- Ability to work a flexible schedule, including weekends and holidays.
