We are currently seeking a full-time Staff Engineer to join our Construction Services team in Asheville, North Carolina.
Job Snapshot:
As a Construction Materials Staff Engineer, you play a crucial role in ensuring the quality and safety of construction projects by assessing and verifying the properties and quality of materials used in construction. Working under the supervision of a Licensed Engineer, you will coordinate field explorations, field logging of soil samples, performing engineering calculations/design, preparation of proposals and reports, and project and client support.
This position will consist of both office and fieldwork.
- Material Testing:
- Conduct various tests on construction materials to determine their properties and quality, testing soil, concrete, asphalt, aggregate, and masonry mortar/grout on construction projects for compliance with ASTM, AASHTO, DOT, and/or project specifications
- Utilize Metafield®, and/or other information management systems for recording daily field data and test results
- Quality Control:
- Review of civil, architectural, and structural plans and specifications in preparation for field site visits and observations
- Documentation:
- Maintain detailed records of field activities, observations, and testing on construction projects, and their conformance with (or deviation from) project plans and specifications
- Reports:
- Assisting Project Management staff by reviewing field data, addressing construction issues, and preparing formal reports
- Create cost estimates and proposals for field and laboratory work in line with project plans, specifications, IBC requirements, and client RFPs.
Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in Civil or Geotechnical Engineering or a closely related field
- 0-2 years of professional experience
- Basic working knowledge of construction plans and specifications
- Excellent computer skills including Microsoft Office, AutoCAD, MicroStation, with the ability to learn commercial software applications
- Willingness to obtain International Code Council (ICC), American Concrete Institute (ACI), and/or Department of Transportation (DOT) certifications in the fields of aggregate, asphalt, soil, reinforced concrete, and masonry
Preferred Qualifications:
- Engineering or Geology Intern certification (or ability to obtain within 12 months)
Working Conditions and Physical Demands:
You are willing and able to perform the physical demands of this position with the use of Company-provided Personal Protective Equipment such as:
- Working outdoors the majority of the time in varying weather conditions
- Routinely lifting and carrying 40-50lbs, (field/laboratory samples and equipment)
- Maneuver field equipment safely, such as a loaded wheelbarrow, on uneven ground and around active construction sites
- Traveling out-of-town (typically overnight) for assignments as necessary
- Working outside of normal business hours when necessary
