What are the responsibilities and job description for the Keeper, Carnivores position at Saint Louis Zoo Openings?
Responsibilities: Keeper will be assigned to work in all Carnivore areas as needed, including work with potentially dangerous animals. Major responsibilities include: cleaning and maintaining habitats, bedrooms, and service areas; continual monitoring of habitats and public area condition with attention to detail; feeding and watering of animals; providing assistance in veterinary management (medicating and exams); participating in the use of behavioral conditioning to train species for husbandry, management and medical purposes; maintaining departmental records; utilizing enrichment program to provide variable and diverse behavioral opportunities; contribute to team discussions in positive and professional manner; be safety minded and adhere to all protocols and working on special projects as needed.
Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree in biology, zoology, animal science or a related field, and previous animal care experience is preferred. Good writing and public speaking skills are desirable, as well as the ability to work independently and as part of a team. Attention to detail and ability to strictly follow safety protocols is required. Candidates must have the physical ability to perform required duties as assigned, including standing and walking for long periods of time, kneeling, bending, squatting, lifting (which may include up to 50 lbs.) and working outdoors in all types of weather conditions. Diver certification is preferred.
