What are the responsibilities and job description for the Coordinator of Online Writing Support Services position at San Jose State University?
Job Summary
Reporting to the Associate Dean of Student Success and Academic Programs, and under the direct work lead/supervision of the Writing Center Director, the Coordinator of Online Writing Support Services develops and maintains all aspects of online writing support services at SJSU. Working in the SJSU Writing Center under general supervision, the Coordinator develops, maintains, facilitates, and assesses the robust online training for Writing Center tutors; works with faculty in different disciplines to support student writing in an online environment; and develops and maintains instructional writing resources for faculty and students, including the successful Writing Center blog and social media channels. With a secondary focus on adult learners, the Coordinator also develops writing support initiatives for students in the new SJSU Online program. Using metrics developed by the university, the Coordinator gathers, synthesizes, and presents student success information as it relates to students in online classes and/or programs.
Key Responsibilities
* Serve as editor for the Writing Center blog-an instructional resource that allows the Writing Center to offer students additional asynchronous online learning resources
* Oversee blog entries that Writing Center tutors produce every semester, a process that includes giving them parameters for blog writing, setting due dates, and providing feedback on proposals and drafts
* Develop additional writing resources specifically for online students (e.g., handouts, videos, workshops), addressing the diverse needs of learners across campus.
* Provide oversight for Writing Center social media channels with a social media student coordinator
* Provide oversight for online digital marketing in collaboration with Writing Center staff.
* Collaborate with the SJSU Online program to assess their students' needs and to develop initiatives that support the writing of adult learners in the program
* Collaborate with faculty from disciplines across campus to assess their students' needs and to develop initiatives that support the writing of students in online and/or hybrid courses
* Work as a Writing Center team member with units and departments across campus on delivery of writing support events and services, student retention initiatives, and academic success workshops
* Research and refine existing tutor training for Writing Center tutors about working online
* Develop new tutor training modules/activities related to working online (based on current best practices in the field of online tutoring/writing center studies)
* Facilitate training sessions at monthly staff meetings for Writing Center employees
* Participate in professional development opportunities related to online writing support services
* Represent the university at conferences on writing centers and online learning.
* Serve on university committees related to online learning

* Demonstrated knowledge of pedagogical best practices in general tutoring and in writing centers

Required Qualifications
* Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university in a related field, including or supplemented by upper division or graduate coursework in counseling techniques, interviewing, and conflict resolution where such are job-related
* Three years of progressively responsible professional student services work experience. A master's degree in Counseling, Clinical Psychology, Social Work, or a directly related field may be substituted for one year of experience. A doctorate degree and the appropriate internship or clinical training in counseling or guidance may be substituted for the three years of experience for positions with a major responsibility for professional career or personal counseling
Preferred Qualifications
* MA, MFA, or PhD in English, Linguistics, Rhetoric/Composition, Creative Writing, or directly related discipline
* 2-3 years of experience working in tutoring or writing centers
* Experience working with students online in a university setting
* Experience working with adult learners
* Experience providing oversight/direction to student staff
* Experience in assessing and reporting on student support services
