SUMMARY
Perform procedures in chemistry, hematology, blood banking, coagulation, serology, microbiology, and urinalysis. Maintain records fined in the laboratory's general and sectional policy and procedure manuals.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and /or ability required.
Perform specimen collection which includes arterial punctures, venipunctures, and capillary sticks.
Maintain records of procedure performance, patient results, and quality control. Plots results of controls on Levey-Jennings charts. Follow defined protocol for investigating out-of-controls runs and implement necessary remedial action.
Review relevant laboratory reports for extraordinary results and clerical errors before they are reported to the patient;patient's medical records, including reports on procedures processed in reference laboratories.
Maintain equipment in accordance with define policies and protocols and log preventative and remedial maintenance of equipment, including daily temperatures.
Read policy and procedure manual on an annual basis.
May participate in research and development of new procedures and changes to existing procedures. May participate in writing policies and protocols for new or changed procedures.
May participate in cost analysis of existing and prospective test procedures.
Participate in all safety, security and infection control programs that are mandatory as well as those required and provided by the department.
Uphold confidentiality and HIPAA compliance at all times and report violations to the Privacy Officer.
Understand and comply with the requirements of the Saunders Medical Center’s Compliance Program, including, but not limited to the Code of Conduct, the Compliance Policy, all Saunders Medical Center-wide policies for compliance, and compliance plans affecting specific duties and responsibilities.
Participate in all education and training programs regarding compliance as required by Saunders Medical Center policy and as requested by the Supervisor.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
Assist in supervision of Laboratory Assistant/Phlebotomist.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
Bachelor’s Degree-NAACLS accredited MLS/MT program
Associate Degree-NAACLS accredited MLT program
Associate Degree in chemistry, biology or physics and completion of a military laboratory-training program of at least 12 months.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS
MLS/MT/MLT (ASCP)
or
MT/MLT (AMT)
LANGUAGE SKILLS
Must be able to read, write and follow written and oral instructions and possess positive skills in communication. Ability to deal tactfully with personnel, patients, visitors, and the general public.
Ability to read, analyze and interpret professional journals, technical procedures or governmental regulations.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS
Ability to calculate at the level necessary to perform essential duties of the position.
REASONING ABILITY
Ability to make independent decisions when circumstances warrant such action. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in oral, written, diagram or schedule form.
