Job Purpose
The Tobacco Coordinator performs examinations, reviews tax returns to ensure compliance with SC tobacco tax laws, and coordinates activities/programs impacting tobacco and tobacco alternative taxes in a cooperative effort with the SC Attorney General office and any applicable state and/or federal agency.
Job Duties
- Coordinate, plan, work, and track taxes relating to tobacco and tobacco alternatives for SCDOR in close collaboration with the Miscellaneous Audit section, SC Attorney General office, and any other applicable state and/or federal agency
- Track taxpayers activity, analyzes each tobacco return for compliance with state tobacco laws
- Review tobacco tax returns for computer processing, correct exceptions on-line, evaluate accounts for compliance, verify returns and schedules, send correspondence as needed, attach/scan related items, and issue assessments/refunds
- Analyze, develop requirements and business rules, test, implement, and monitor applicable systems, interfaces, and reports implemented for functions relating to tobacco and tobacco alternative taxes
- Determine any system modifications or enhancements needed and develop requirements and business rules, submit SQRs, work with developers and vendor, perform needed testing prior to implementation and then monitor the modification/enhancement
- Create, maintain, and compile reports related to tobacco and tobacco alternative taxes for distribution internally and externally to the Miscellaneous Audit section, SC Attorney General office, and any other applicable state and/or federal agency
- Provide professional and courteous customer service to internal and external customers/stakeholders via telephone, email and/or written correspondence in a timely manner
- Create, review, and update all forms, booklets, procedures, and training manuals related to tobacco and tobacco alternative taxes
- Create, develop, and conduct trainings and presentations relating to tobacco and tobacco alternative taxes as needed
- Assist the Miscellaneous Tax section with hunt line calls not related to tobacco and tobacco alternative taxes, and assist with administrative tasks as needed
Minimum and Additional Requirements
Requires one of the following:
- A bachelor’s degree and two (2) years of business related experience
- An associate degree and four (4) years of business related experience
- A high school diploma and six (6) years of business related experience
- Academic degrees must be from an accredited institution of higher learning
Preferred Qualifications
- A bachelor’s degree or associate’s degree in business, auditing or project management and experience in business, auditing, or project management
- Basic knowledge of SC tax laws, forms, and on-line computer tax systems
- Ability to communicate effectively with the public and fellow employees

Pay: From $36,047.00 per year
