The Job

This position supports the Risk Management team in meeting its goals and objectives and SCAN’s overall strategic objectives, which includes facilitating SCAN’s efforts to maintain compliance with privacy practices and policies in accordance with governing federal and state law regulations, including the privacy component of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA) and Health Information Technology for Economic and Clinical Health Act (the HITECH Act) of 2009. This position is also responsible for business continuity preparatory and response activities under SCAN’s Business Continuity Plan.


You Will

Conduct preliminary investigations of privacy incidents. Complete and maintain findings of the investigation, risk assessment, corrective action plan, and other pertinent information in the database for tracking and trending. Work with impacted business/operational staff to ensure development and completion of action plans for remediation of privacy incidents.

Process and track requests for Accounting of Disclosures, Amendments of PHI, and Requests to Restrict Use and Disclosure.

Implement controls to maintain members’ right to privacy, and protect SCAN operations by helping safeguard member PHI and confidential plan information.

Conduct business associate due diligence including preliminary review of the vendor’s privacy program and evaluation of privacy/security risks to the plan.

Coordinate and track business associate inventory and conduct ongoing monitoring activities of the plan’s business associates.

Facilitate and promote activities to foster HIPAA privacy awareness within the organization and related entities.

Assess potential business continuity disruption events reported to the plan and work with supervisor to determine the actions required by the plan.

Develop communications and status updates for the plan’s business continuity team about business continuity disruption events.

Attend business continuity team meetings and ensure actions taken by the plan in response to a business continuity disruption event are recorded and tracked until completed.

Participate in the development and support of routine and ad hoc privacy and business continuity trainings for SCAN staff.

Cooperate with regulatory agencies, legal entities, and organization officers in compliance reviews or investigations.

Maintain professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops; reviewing professional publications; establishing personal networks; participating in professional societies.

Contribute to team effort by accomplishing related results as needed.

Your Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree
  • 1-3 years of relevant compliance work experience in the healthcare industry
  • Experience working Business Continuity is preferred
  • Thorough understanding of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA)
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, as well as strong interpersonal, critical thinking and analytical skills
  • Excellent organizational, decision-making and multi-tasking skills
  • Ability to multitask and work with limited supervision
  • Ability to appropriately maintain confidentiality
  • Ability to work well in a fast-paced and dynamic environment
