JOB DESCRIPTION

JOB GOAL:

To provide school social work services to all students and assessments to assist in the evaluation and diagnosis of students suspected of having special educational needs. To collaborate with school staff and community agencies to establish positive educational programs.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Social Work from an accredited educational institution in related area.
  • Certification in school social work by the Florida Department of Education.
  • Valid Florida Driver’s License.
  • Experience in school social work, preferred.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

Knowledge of child development, mental health issues and family dynamics. Ability to interview, assess and evaluate. Skills in oral and written communication. Ability to develop and maintain effective relationships with students, teachers and families. Ability to organize and manage time. Knowledge of available services and how to access them. Ability to operate a computer and utilize software applications related to assignment. Ability to schedule time, prioritize and work efficiently. Ability to handle sensitive information with confidentiality.

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • School social workers shall conduct assessments of individuals, families and systems/organizations with the goal of improving student social, emotional, behavioral, and academic outcomes.
  • Participation in the MTSS and Section 504 process will include pulling, analyzing, and graphing data.
  • Direct contact/counseling with students who have been referred for potential mental health issues and who have a history of either aggressive or suicidal behaviors.
  • Provide guidance and counseling for children, parents, teachers, and other educational professionals, when situations merit this service, to enhance educational progress and related services.
  • Provide casework services and make referrals to existing community resources and provide follow-up services.
  • Provide support and complete Social/Developmental Assessments to assist in the evaluation of students suspected of having special educational needs and/or to determine eligibility for Exceptional Student Education programs.
  • Recommend appropriate program placement and/or prescriptive and/or techniques for children for the purposes of achieving optimal educational adjustment following evaluation.
  • Collaborate with parents, teachers, principals, and other school personnel regarding student needs.
  • Participate in the case conferences of children, when appropriate.
  • Represent the School Board and/or Student Services Department in interactions with community agencies and within the school district toward the establishment of positive education programs and interrelated services.
  • Assists parent/guardian with school enrollment and transportation services, and with obtaining educational/medical reports or immunizations for their children.
  • Identify factors that may affect the student’s academic and behavioral performance in the classroom and expeditiously follow-up on referrals including special education, language assistance and/or supplemental academic services.
  • Provide linkages with providers who can help with mental health counseling; assist parent/guardian in making informed decisions about the types of services to access; make referrals to community agencies; and provide case management to facilitate each student’s ability to maintain a stable educational environment.
  • Support principal in an effort to improve graduation rates.
  • Work directly with school counselor to assist with chronically absent students.
  • Work directly with parents to facilitate improved attendance.
  • Work directly with school personnel to track, monitor, and retrieve chronically absent students through a variety of means to include home visits.
  • Work directly with school attendance teams to develop individual attendance plans for students who struggle with attendance.
  • Provide training for teachers and other education professionals as appropriate.
  • Participate in multidisciplinary team meetings.
  • Actively participate on district/school committees, as appropriate.
  • Facilitate Section 504 evaluations.
  • Supervise student interns as the opportunity presents.
  • Maintain confidentiality regarding school/workplace matters.
  • Meet and deal effectively with the general public, staff members, students, parents, administrators and other contact persons using tact and good judgment.
  • Exhibit interpersonal skills to work as an effective team member.
  • Model and maintain high ethical standards in advocacy and education.
  • Represent the district in a positive and professional manner.
  • Demonstrate initiative in the performance of assigned duties.
  • Respond to inquiries and concerns in a timely manner.
  • Communicate effectively with students, parents, staff, administrators and vendors.
  • Keep supervisor informed of potential problems or unusual events.
  • Follow federal and state laws as well as School Board policies, rules and regulations.
  • Demonstrate support for the school district and its goals and objectives.
  • Prepare all required reports and maintain all appropriate records.
  • Participate successfully in the training programs offered to increase skill and proficiency related to assignment.
  • Review current developments, literature and technical sources of information related to job responsibility.
  • Perform other tasks consistent with the goals and objectives of this position.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Light Work: Exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force as frequently as needed to move objects.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:

Salary and benefits shall be paid consistent with the District’s approved compensation plan. Length of the work year and hours of employment shall be those established by the District.

Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the Board’s policy on evaluation of personnel.
