Role and Responsibilities
The circulation library clerk provides direct service to library patrons and performs basic clerical and circulation related tasks.
- Be present, visible, and provide excellent customer support and service to patrons
- Respond to a variety of questions and needs from patrons related to the library at the Circulation desk
- Charge and discharge library materials
- Assist patrons signing up for library cards and issue library cards
- Assist patrons in use of online public access catalog and the self-check station
- Assist patrons in locating material on the shelves
- Assist in shelving materials and straightening shelves as needed
- Collect money (if necessary) for library fines and fees
- Explain and enforce library policies and procedures
- Communicate hold arrivals to patrons
- Notary (training to become a notary will be provided)
- Other duties as assigned
Expected Hours of Work
Employee must work 37.5 hours a week to maintain full time status. Evening and weekend work is required.
Week 1
Sun 10:45am - 7:15pm
Mon 8:30am - 5:00pm
Tues 11:45am - 8:15pm
Wed 11:45am - 8:15pm
Thurs 11:45am - 8:15pm
Week 2
Mon 8:30am - 5:00pm
Tues 11:45am - 8:15pm
Wed 11:45am - 8:15pm
Thurs 11:45am - 8:15pm
Fri 9:30am - 6:00pm
Week 3
Mon 8:30am - 5:00pm
Tues 11:45am - 8:15pm
Wed 11:45am - 8:15pm
Thus 8:30am - 5:00pm
Sat 10:45am - 7:15pm
Required education and experience
- High School Diploma or GED
- Basic knowledge of personal computers: e-mail and internet searches.
- Library experience and/or Spanish language proficiency preferred.
Competencies
- Ability to obtain a Paraprofessional 3 Library Certificate issued by the Kentucky State Board for the Certification of Librarians.
- Ability to read, write, and compute.
- Ability to establish and maintain harmonious relations with staff and the public.
- Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
- Ability to maintain high standards of customer service and commitment to public service.
- Strong organizational skills and basic computer skills.
- Strong ability to prioritize multiple responsibilities with attention to detail.
Physical Demands
- Light work (lifting, pushing, or pulling 30 lbs. or more)
- Movement through facility locations and assisting patrons
- Visual acuity sufficient to identify materials on shelfing up to 90β and to read primarily typed or printed text in a variety of types sizes.
