OVERALL DESCRIPTION
The Director, Cultural Strategy has an exciting opportunity to make an impact in driving, growing, and championing SEPTA’s Diversity, Equity and Belonging (DEB) initiatives. This leader will report directly to the Chief Equity & Inclusion Officer and serve as a trusted subject matter expert (SME) for the DEB Council, bringing strategy and execution together to create a sense of belonging for all employees, and promote a culture where diversity is celebrated and leveraged to drive SEPTA’s overall mission and success. The ideal candidate for this position is a good listener who works and leads with empathy and good judgment.
SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES
- Leverages DEI expertise and leadership skills to increase awareness and provide support and guidance through targeted programs, employee resource groups (ERG), and external partnerships.
- Supports the Chief Equity and Inclusion Officer (CEIO) in setting DEI short and long-term organizational DEI strategy development and implementation, including establishing goals and metrics for success and executing future and current plans.
- Oversees, supports, and partners with the Diversity Equity and Belonging (DEB) Council to develop and advance the DEI strategic agenda and priorities.
- Provides direct supervision of the DEI Program Manager, including goal setting, performance management, and coaching.
- Builds leadership and HR understanding of DEI and best practices by providing industry insights.
- Works with Learning and Development to identify and/or develop learning experiences to help employees embrace and understand differing perspectives.
- Confers with the Office of General Counsel as needed on the review, development, and implementation of DEI strategy and initiatives to support compliance with applicable laws and reporting.
- Develops strategic partnerships with the leadership team, Human Resources, Communications and other internal stakeholders to identify diversity, equity, inclusion, and engagement initiatives that foster and address SEPTA strategic goals and needs.
- Works closely with Human Resources to integrate DEB into processes and policies across the employee life cycle.
- Partners with internal and external community partnerships to support DEI projects/plans/initiatives and business strategies.
- Identifies and builds relationships with industry leaders, consultants & partners to apply best practices.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE
- Bachelor’s degree or higher from an accredited college in a relevant field of study plus ten (10) years’ of professional level experience which includes four (4) or more years of experience leading and advancing diversity, equity, inclusion, and/or social justice initiatives within organizations required.
- Previous management/supervisory experience within an organization required.
- Proven ability to design, lead, develop and implement DEI strategies, ERGs, and learning experiences required.
- Ability to leverage excellent communication and collaboration skills to build trust, stakeholder engagement, and change management throughout SEPTA required.
- Ability to present information to team members across various levels of the organization and diverse populations required.
- Ability to capture, analyze, and report on data and metrics required.
- Demonstrates understanding of the intersection between DEI and fair employment practices, including equal employment opportunity, anti-harassment and prevention, ADA accommodations, and other related policies and practices required.
- Demonstrated understanding of HR policies, practices, and systems required.
- Ability to effectively manage people, multiple projects, and priorities simultaneously required.
- Strong collaboration and interpersonal skills with confidence, diplomacy, and ability to challenge the status quo, influence, and inspire required.
- Passion for creating an inclusive company culture and ability to turn strategy into actionable and measurable DEI initiatives required.
- Demonstrated experience working with sensitive subject matter and confidentiality required.
