What You Will Do
The Librarian is responsible for the day-to-day functions of the Library. The Librarian is also responsible for retail operations, if such service is available at the Library location.
Responsibilities: Directly implements and collaborates to plan library services. Provides a full range of reference services, customer-driven collection development/acquisitions, excellent customer service, marketing, classroom calendar management, end-user support and department-driven retail materials (if present). Monitors library productivity, budget, new technology, departmental policies and procedures, and safety. Collaborates with and provides back-up for the Library Services department team.
Required Qualifications
- Master's Degree in Library Science (MLA Certified). Please include your Master's degree on your resume.
- 3 Years library experience specializing in consumer health, medical, or health sciences;Or
- library school specialization in consumer health, medical, or health sciences librarianship.
Preferred Qualifications
- Retail experience, product knowledge and merchandising.
Essential Functions

Customer service
Consistently communicates in a positive and timely manner with Sharp staff, affiliated physicians, patients and the community.

Provides the full range of reference, literature search services and product information in a timely, efficient and satisfactory manner.
Maintains a process for managing and locating information resources in the library.
May also include merchandising of retail items through placement, marketing and sharing product knowledge.
May also include support of specific populations in collaboration with other departments or group such as through the Senior Resource Center and Healthy Aging Team initiatives. -
Financial management
Assists in developing the annual budget.
Monitors expenses, investigates and resolves discrepancies; remains within budget.
Contributes to the identification and implementation of cost saving measures.
Identifies financial savings and customer growth opportunities. -
Marketing
Identify and execute new methods to market library services and retail items, if retail services are present.
May include collaboration with Corporate Communications to publicize programs, special events and book signings held in the classrooms.
May include development of consumer health information theme months with accompanying promotional items and informational materials.
May include creation and distribute of a quarterly Consumer Health Library and Shop newsletter.
May include providing tours of the library facilities. -
Professional responsibilities

Maintains current awareness of medical and health library resources and technologies through continuing education. Ensures availability of relevant health information resources.
Submits monthly usage statistics reports in a complete and timely manner; proactively communicates all activities, progress, milestones, challenges and issues. -

Maintains quality of services through operational expertise, statistics and effective management skills.
Assures standards of service are implemented, evaluated and updated.
Assures the library meets all accreditation and regulatory standards.
Reviews, revises, develops and maintains safety policies and procedures.
Oversees library and online information resource systems; upgrades and troubleshoots technical problems.
Practices proactive library collection development by monitoring customers’ informational needs; identifies and fills gaps.
Effectively institutes change, prioritization, new technology and organizational goals.
Maintains a positive and productive relationship with customers and staff.
Establishes and maintains relationships with hospital departments and community agencies to ensure effective usage of the library.
Identifies departmental service level issues or organizational challenges and collaborates on resolutions.
May include support of shop operations by monitoring customer and department needs.
Leads and participates in other special projects or activities as needed.
Provides support and collaborates with other departments, centers, or sites to support the organization’s goal as a whole.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

- Knowledge of search strategies used in a variety of bibliographic databases including PubMed, CINAHL, Proquest, OVID and EBSCO.
- Knowledge of computer database systems, Integrated Library Management Systems (ILMS), MS Office & Teams, Internet browsers, printers, scanners, iPads, smart phones, and similar equipment.
- Proficient in typing, filing, organizing and general office skills.
