POSITION: PRINCIPAL

Shrewsbury Public Schools is currently accepting applications for the Principal of Major Howard W. Beal School (K-4), beginning July 1, 2023. This position’s primary purpose is to establish a school culture that provides a deep sense of belonging and optimal student learning. The Principal of Major Howard W. Beal School reports directly to the Superintendent of Schools and negotiates an individual contract with the Superintendent. As the educational leader of the school, the Principal works cooperatively with students, parents, educators, support staff, and administrators. The Principal for Major Howard W. Beal School will be a member of the district’s School Leadership Team, which comprises all Principals and Central Office Administrator roles.
The Major Howard W. Beal School is a beautiful and diverse K-4 school, which opened in 2021. It was innovatively designed with the educational needs of all learners in mind. It serves over 600 students Grade K-4 with 160 full and part-time faculty and staff.

Responsibilities:
Climate and Culture
Provides leadership that promotes a climate and culture of belonging and respect for all students and all school community members
Promotes effective practices in social and emotional learning to meet the needs of elementary students
Invests time and energy in building relationships with students, families, and staff, so that their voices are honored in the ongoing work of school improvement
Curriculum, Instruction, and Assessment
Establishes a shared vision for continuous improvements in student learning
Supervises instruction and the implementation of curriculum
Assists the Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum, Instruction, and Assessment and Curriculum Coordinators in the review and articulation of curriculum
Implements all testing and assessment programs
Develops a master schedule in conjunction with the Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum, Instruction, and Assessment; other principals; assistant principals; department directors; and staff
Obtains and allocates resources for implementing the curriculum
Demonstrates knowledge of current trends in education
Human Resources
Hires licensed/license eligible faculty with the approval of the Superintendent
Implements the teacher supervision and educator evaluation program
Supervises and evaluates administrators, professional educators and paraprofessionals who are assigned to the school
Assigns staff to meet student needs
Assigns specialists, assistants, and other support staff to meet the needs of students and teachers
Professional Development
Investigates and facilitates professional development opportunities for staff
Orients new staff to the procedures and culture of the school
Maintains their own professional development and licensure through coursework, conference attendance, professional meetings, etc.
Finance and Operations
Participates in the preparation and implementation of the school budget and manages all school-level financial accounts
·Manages the physical plant in cooperation with Public Buildings staff
Pursues grant opportunities and encourages staff members to seek grants for innovative programs
Monitors all school grants in accordance with school district policies
Other
Implements guidelines for student discipline and conduct
Co-chairs the school council and is responsible for writing and implementing the school improvement plan
Participates in, and encourages parent and community involvement in the schools
Provides an effective home-school relationship by means of open hours, newsletters, and public relations that inform parents and the community about school programs
Designs educational opportunities for the extended school community
Keeps the Superintendent of Schools informed about the conditions and needs of the school
Prepares reports for the Superintendent of Schools
Takes all necessary precautions to safeguard the health, safety, and well-being of children and staff, including formulation of plans to meet emergencies
Serves on leadership teams to provide direction and support on district-wide issues
Implements the district’s goals
Establishes school and personal goals and expectations
Implements School Committee policies
Performs other tasks assigned by the Superintendent of Schools
Preferred Qualifications
The position of Principal of Major Howard W. Beal School is an excellent opportunity for an outstanding education leader. The following professional and personal qualifications are desirable:
Master’s degree or above
Massachusetts principal licensure that includes grades K-4
Highly successful teaching and/or administrative experience
Ability to build/sustain a culture of respect and well-being among students, staff, and parents
Solid understanding of learning principles and best practices in elementary school education, including curriculum, instruction, and assessment
Working knowledge of standards-based instructional and grading practices
Ability to facilitate the development, implementation, and evaluation of an effective instructional programs
Ability to facilitate quality teaching through professional development activities, supervision, and meaningful evaluation
Ability to engage the entire school community in a shared vision and the development of goals to promote student achievement, including the professional learning community model
Ability to work collaboratively and effectively with all members of the school community in supporting school improvement plan goals, district goals, and strategic priorities
Experience with and a strong belief system in practices that promote diversity, belonging, inclusion and equity
Strong interpersonal skills
Excellent communication skills

Work Year/Compensation
Per School Committee policy, the successful applicant will be offered an initial two-year employment contract for 215 days of work to include school days plus additional days to be scheduled with the Superintendent of Schools. Salary will be competitive, in a range from $127,000 to $140,000, commensurate with qualifications and experience. Contract work year is July 1-June 30. The district offers a comprehensive benefits package as well as significant professional development opportunities, including financial support for a doctoral program after demonstrated success in the role.
The Search Process
The selection process will include initial resume screening. Semi-finalists will interview with a team of parents, staff, and administrators. Finalists will be invited to spend a day at the Major Howard W. Beal School, visiting classrooms and meeting with the current principal, students, parents, staff, and other district principals and central office administrators. The visit will include an interview with the Superintendent of Schools. The process will also include an evening parent/community forum for the finalists. Members of the interview team will also conduct a site visit to the school/district of each finalist.
Selection Process Timeline
The application deadline is April 3, 2023. Screening of applicants will commence as applications are received. Interviews will be held in April as well as finalist visits to Shrewsbury, followed by site visits to the school of each finalist.

Individuals applying for this position need to submit the following: letter of application, current resume, copies of undergraduate and graduate transcripts, three current letters of reference from school personnel who have supervised or worked closely with the applicant, and a copy of Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education License as a Principal that includes Grades K-4 or documentation of eligibility for Massachusetts licensure.
