What are the responsibilities and job description for the Ophthalmic Technician III (Scribe) position at SightMD?

SUMMARY: As the Ophthalmic Technician III, you will play a vital role as an assistant to our physicians. Prior medical experience is required, specifically in ophthalmology. You should be able to communicate professionally, be comfortable working in a medical environment, be highly organized, have a strong customer service background, possess excellent computer and organizational skills, and embody a welcoming/friendly demeanor.
Your schedule will vary, dependent on the operational hours of the office you are assigned to. You must have the flexibility to work within these hours of operation, including occasional weekends, early mornings, or late evenings as needed.
$23-$25/ based on experience
Job Duties & Essential Functions:
- Greet and guide patients to examination rooms
- Acquaint yourself with all new and established patients, providing plan/setting expectations for visit
- Obtain patient medical history to include chief complaint or reason for visit, family medical history, history of any allergies and list of current medications
- Perform basic eye tests prior to physician exam and ensure patient understands what is being performed and how they will be affected during the tests; Tests include, but are not limited to - basic vision (wall chart), depth perception, color blindness, eye pressure, topography, autorefraction/refraction, visual field, tear lab
- Verify patients current eye prescription information
- Dilate patients eyes using eye drops if needed for further testing
- Perform advanced eye tests, including but not limited to: OCT (pictures of the retina layers), Fundus photos (picture of the back of the eye), IOLMaster (measures the length of the eye), Pentacam (measures the tissue properties of the cornea), A-Scan and B-Scan (sonogram of the eye), and WaveScan (creates a digital “fingerprint” of vision prior to surgery)
- Maintain a smooth and seamless flow of patients to examination rooms
- Renew prescription eye drops as directed by physician
- Respond to patients, pharmacies, and other medical parties in a timely manner
- Document all history and testing information accurately and consistently
- Summarize all exam details from physician into patients electronic chart, including but not limited to: proper charting of examination, additions to chief complaint, physician assessment and recommendations for treatment
- Observe patient and physician during exam and assist as needed or when appropriate
- Maintain awareness of the patients verbal and nonverbal communication when the physician is providing instructions, as you may need to repeat the information or provide educational materials for the patient to review at home
- Ensure patient understands all verbal and written instruction from physician
- Assist physician in patient care and minor surgical procedures in examination room
- E-prescribe new medications as directed by the physician
- Add diagnosis in patients electronic chart and ensure codes match diagnosis for billing purposes
- Guide patient to front desk after completion of the exam and ensure proper follow-up appointments are scheduled
- Secure patient information and maintain patient confidentiality by completing and safeguarding medical records and by maintaining accuracy of diagnostic and procedure coding
- Manage inventory supply needs for the office and verify receipt of goods
- Maintain operating integrity of office equipment, troubleshooting and performing preventive maintenance as necessary
- Actively participates in continuing education by attending relevant educational classes/webinars and staying abreast of all industry best practices
- Other duties as assigned or directed by your supervisor
Required Qualifications:
- High School diploma or equivalent required
- Minimum of 1 year experience as an Ophthalmic Technician II
- Working knowledge of ophthalmic medical terminology
- Billing and coding experience in an EMR system
- Open availability to work, including early mornings, late evenings, and weekends
- Basic to advanced computer skills required
Preferred Qualifications:
- Prior experience in the medical field, understanding of medical terminology, and COA certification preferred but not required
- Phlebotomy experience preferred
- Bilingual Spanish a plus
