What are the responsibilities and job description for the Aquarist 1 $20.00/HR position at Six Flags?
Essential Job Duties
Provide in‑tank maintenance including scrubbing algae, vacuuming sand, cleaning windows, etc.
Diet preparation and record keeping.
Check the health and appearance of the fish on a daily basis and immediately report any problems to Aquarium Leadership.
Check pumps and filters and immediately report any issues to the Aquarium Leadership.
Perform housekeeping duties, including guest areas of Shark Experience and Sting Ray Bay.
Assist with feeding and training sessions as assigned.
Under supervision, learn entry-level training techniques and maintain existing animal behaviors.
Assist with educational programs and guest relations.
Perform and interpret results from water quality tests and make adjustments as needed.
Operating Life Support Systems for Sting Ray Bay, Shark Basin, Deep Reef and Koi Pond.
Training and development of interns.
Participate in animal restraint, moves, and transport operations.
Follow all policies and procedures of Six Flags Discovery Kingdom and the Aquarium Department.
Understand and execute proper bio-security procedures.
Able to identify each individual shark and ray by species and house name.
Other duties and special projects as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
Prior experience in the care, husbandry, water quality and life support systems of a variety of fish species. Elasmobranch experience preferred.
Must be 18 years of age or older.
Must have a high school diploma or equivalent.
Must possess a valid driver license and be able to operate vehicles (including but not limited to forklifts, golf carts, cars, trucks, etc.).
Must be comfortable speaking in front of large crowds.
Must be articulate and able to clearly speak, read, and write in English.
Must have good vision and hearing.
Must be willing to listen and follow both written and verbal instructions.
SCUBA certification required.
Must possess mechanical aptitude and have the knowledge to use basic power and hand tools
Must be able to work with chemicals and follow SDS and have knowledge of basic chemistry.
Must be willing and able to work a minimum of 32 hours per week, both indoors and outdoors, in all weather conditions.
Must be willing and able to work in and around saltwater and electrical equipment.
Must possess strong swimming skills.
Must be available to work weekends and holidays.
Must possess the mental and physical capacities necessary to perform primary responsibilities and pass an annual physical exam and stress test.
Must be able to lift up to 60 lbs.
