What are the responsibilities and job description for the Third Mate position at Skilled Workforce?
Seeking up to two 3rd Mate on a Class I self-propelled dustpan pipeline dredge engaged in channel maintenance in the inland waters of the U.S.
Duties are performed while underway and include, but are not limited to the following:
Ø Stands a shift watch and works of a crew of 2-12 subordinates employed in any combination of occupations including tender operator, deck equipment operator, pipeline man, deckhand, welders, leverman, carpenter, winchman, etc.
Ø Exercises responsibility for the continued operation, maintenance, and safety of the dredge and attendant plant during the shift.
Work activities directed during the assigned shift watch include any of the following:
Ø making and breaking up of tows for dredging moves, placement and movement of dredging anchors; lengthening, shortening and movement of the pipeline; operation of pipeline baffle plate; operation of winch and hoisting engines.
Ø transfer of and placement of pipeline from barge to bank and movement of such pipeline during or upon completion of work
Ø maintaining and repairing pipeline and deck equipment, replacing cables, lines, sheaves, dustpan, rubber sleeves, etc. general maintenance including cleaning, chipping surfaces, painting, minor woodwork, and metal repairs; cleaning suction or cutterheads; placing lights and targets; placing dredging targets
Ø taking and maintaining records of soundings
Ø servicing deck equipment; loading, unloading, and movement of materials, equipment, and supplies; etc.
RESPONSIBILITY
Ø Planning. Participates with the 1st Mate in planning and laying out the work for the shift towhich assigned and in accordance with such plans determines the specific operation and maintenance requirements during the shift and the sequence of work operations for members ofthe shift crew.
o Determines the crew members to perform specific work activities and the methods, procedures, and tools to use.
o Insures that tools, material, and supplies are available, notifies 1stMate to obtain replacement of necessary items and inspects supplies, materials, and equipment received for adequacy.
o Inspects all deck, auxiliary machinery, equipment, and systems during theshift to identify maintenance and repair requirements.
o Assist 1st Mate in making cost estimates and estimates of material and man hours required to accomplish repairs.
Ø Work Direction. Works with and directs assigned crew.
o Designates crew members various tasks and assigns work.
o Explains work requirements, methods and procedures to subordinates, instructs them in new procedures to be followed and assists them with problems which they encounter
o Reviews work in progress and on completion to insure that it meets quality and quantity standards.
o Discusses changes in standard or prescribed procedure with supervisor.
o Makes minor adjustments in procedure and sequence of operations as necessary to accomplish the work effectively, safely, and economically.
o Assures that equipment, tools, and supplies are maintained and utilized properly.
Ø Administration. Carries out subordinates on-the-job training and reports the need for training to supervisor.
o Promotes the participation of subordinates in suggestion program, cost reduction program, etc.
o Maintains dredge shift reports, records and logs as required. Follows supervisory requirements in accordance with the District EEO and Affirmative Action Programs.
Ø Safety. Corrects or reports for correction, any unsafe condition or unsafe work practice that might cause injury to employees, or other persons, or property damage.
o Assist in conducting fire, lifeboat, and man overboard drills.
o Remains aware of approaching vessels and moves or directs the movement of the dredge and pipeline out of the lines of traffic.
o Operates the controls in the pilothouse to move the dredge or to drop back to start a new dredging cut.
o Coordinates the suction and discharge operation and is responsible for maintaining maximum efficiency in dredging operation.
Incumbent may be assigned to the maintenance and repair of floating plant or other essential duties during any lay-up period. Performs other duties as assigned
3rd Mate must have a MASTER of TOWING for Western Rivers!

PAY | Regular Time: $45.60/Hour | Overtime: $61.50/Hour
WORK SCHEDULE | 2 Weeks on 12 Hours per day (12 hours on|12 hours off) 7 days/week & 1 WEEK OFF SCHEDULE
TRANSPORTATION | Provided to and from the vessel
