Position: Development Manager

Department: Administration

Location: Main Office

Reports To: Chief Development Officer

FLSA Status: Exempt

Southern Maryland Community Network is a regional nonprofit organization with offices in three Southern Maryland Counties: Calvert, Charles and St. Marys. Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree required.
  • Minimum of three years’ experience in fundraising (can be 1to 3)
  • Proven track record of raising funds from diverse sources, including major gifts from individuals, foundations, corporations and government agencies. I am willing to take someone on who hasn’t covered all of these in the past but has energy and enthusiasm for the role.
  • Experience in donor cultivation, grant writing, contracts management and special events.
  • Knowledge of and connections to the funding community in Southern Maryland
and the surrounding area (Washington, DC, Baltimore, Annapolis)
  • Demonstrated commitment to accountability, measuring outcomes and a
results-oriented culture.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong interpersonal, supervision, administration and management skills.
  • Ability to handle and prioritize multiple tasks while maintaining attention to
detail.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office programs.
  • Familiarity with donor tracking systems.
  • Ability to work with diverse groups of people.
  • Sound judgment, professionalism and a positive attitude.
  • Resourcefulness, creativity and strong problem-solving skills.

Job Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Possess a clean driving record, with no more than 2 points. Must be insurable
under SMCN’s vehicle insurance policy.
  • Ability to successfully pass a criminal background investigation and drug screen.
  • Demonstrated understanding of and willingness to participate in a team
environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate with all employees, consumers, and
community agencies.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills required. Must also have a
working knowledge of Microsoft computer programs and the ability to use the
internet for business purposes.
  • Must be excellent at organizing and prioritizing, paying attention to detail and
accuracy.
  • Must be able to keep information confidential.
  • Must be able to problem solve or seek advice and/or guidance when needed.

Work Environment:

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is exposed to long periods
of computer screen exposure.
  • The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities may include the following, but are not limited to:

Goals: Serving the Community

  • Researching grant opportunities in identified gap areas.
  • Research potential individual and corporate donors. Build out a pipeline of support.
  • Set up meetings with individual donors to understand their interest in our work, also speak directly to our needs and opportunities for funding.
  • Host open house events throughout the year for both general community members and corporations to understand the mission and needs of the organization.
  • Be an engaged and active member of the local chamber of commerce, rotary organizations etc.
  • Increasing community awareness of Cornerstone’s programs through internal partnerships with program staff as well as external stakeholders and networks.

Goal: Meeting Our Budget

  • Work with CDO to establish department budgets including events, donor solicitation.
  • Cultivating relationships with current and prospective funders and supporters, especially individual donors. Maintaining donor database.
  • Maintaining oversight over portfolio including major giving, grants, special events, direct mail appeals, corporate partnership initiatives.
  • Working with the Board of Directors, including the Board fundraising committee, to determine contacts and opportunities both in the individual and corporate sector.

Goal: Maintaining Our Budget

  • Participating in the planning, writing and reviewing development department budget with fellow team members.
  • Managing expense budgets for all fundraising efforts.
  • Track budget throughout the fiscal year to identify shortfalls or surpluses as well as line items that can be reallocated.
