Smithbucklin, a 100 percent employee-owned company that serves associations, communities, and societies, is looking for a business development Proposal Writer and Marketing Manager and Proposal Writer to join a growing corporate marketing team in our Chicago office.
Key responsibilities include developing strategic campaigns and business relationships on behalf of the company, undertaking a marketing role that promotes the Smithbucklin brand and services to drive new business inquiries, and lead and write new business proposals in collaboration with the business development team.
The ideal candidate will combine an in-depth knowledge of branding and business development and possess strong marketing expertise and writing skills with a focus on achieving new business goals.
What You Will Do
- With supervision and guidance from the business development team, you will understand the prospective client's needs and create proposals that are customized to the decision maker.
- Collaborate with the business development team on new client business opportunities to ensure we are positioning the company and our services in a unique and competitive manner.
- Create innovative and creative new business proposals in collaboration with the business development team through copywriting, infographics, case studies, video scripts, testimonials, and more.
- Work closely with the business development team to create new marketing and sales collateral to introduce prospective clients to Smithbucklin including a refreshed capabilities presentation, company overview brochure, etc.
- Develop marketing campaigns in collaboration with Marketing Director and Digital Marketing Manager to support business development goals, including but not limited to email, social media, company website, industry events, advertising, site visits, print collateral, speaking engagements, and more.
- Collaborate with senior executives in the company to develop targeted messaging for prospect audiences and/or services.
- Execute advertising plans for industry visibility and events as needed.
- Oversee the work and execution of junior staff members as needed.
- Own project management and budgets by creating timelines, responsibility assignments, and driving continuous communication with multiple contributors.
- Participate and play an active role in regular meetings to share best practices, information, problem solving, etc.

- You have a track record of developing and delivering effective marketing and business development communications.
- You have exceptional written and verbal communication skills with an understanding of Associated Press style guidelines, solid editing skills, and active-listening skills.
- You have strong ability to manage all aspects of a project from its inception through implementation, including multiple projects at the same time.
- You have the ability to take complex thoughts and synthesize them into clear and concise communications for external audiences.
Qualifications:
- BA/BS required (concentration in marketing or communications preferred)
- Five to seven years of related experience in developing new business proposals from start to finish required
- Must be detail-oriented and well organized in a fast-paced environment
- Manage multiple projects and deadlines simultaneously
- Ability to think creatively and strategically
- Excellent oral and written communication and interpersonal skills
- Working knowledge or experience with professional associations or association management preferred
- Competence in graphic design and/or video creation and editing preferred
