The South Dakota Art Museum is offering an exciting career opportunity as a Coordinator – Curator of Education. We are looking for a creative and innovative professional to join us as this position is an integral part of the museum team. This is a new position devoted to actively supporting the mission of the South Dakota Art Museum by making the permanent collections and special exhibits accessible to all visitors and to audiences across the state through program development and facilitation. This is a 12 month, full-time, benefit-eligible position and reports to the Museum Director.
Must be authorized to work in the U.S. Sponsorship is not available for this position.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
This position provides leadership and vision for the development and implementation of accessible and inclusive programs at the Museum, virtual and offsite programs, and outreach activities that forward the mission of the Museum, meet goals to engage, entertain, and educate existing audiences, and reach new audiences across the state. The position cultivates strategic relationships across South Dakota (with schools, tribal organizations, community arts councils, and more) that result in participatory, relevant programming, community-centric collaborations, unique engagement opportunities, and partnerships.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Art History, Art, Education, Museum Studies, or a related field completed by first day of employment.
  • At least one year of experience in museum education, public programs, community engagement or related specialization, or classroom experience.
  • Enthusiasm for learning and teaching about art, art history, and art techniques—including lecture, inquiry-based, and hands-on methods.
  • Must be able to actively engage and entertain a variety of audiences as a program facilitator.
  • Exceptional organizational, time management, and project management skills.
  • Strong interpersonal, written, and oral communication skills, including highly developed public speaking skills.
  • Works well with teams and can establish and maintain close working relationships with colleagues and community members.
  • Able to work independently.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with a variety of audiences, adjusting teaching and communication methods to accommodate for different learning styles.
  • Valid driver’s license, or ability to obtain one within 30 days of hire, and willingness to travel.
  • Must be able to use a computer, printer, and phone daily.
  • Must be able to lift 40 lbs. and stand for long periods.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Master’s degree in Art History, Art, Education, Museum Studies, or a related field completed by first day of employment.
  • At least three years of experience in museum education, public programs, community engagement or related specialization.
  • Demonstrated experience, training, or certification in Visual Thinking Strategies.

Accredited by the American Alliance of Museums, the South Dakota Art Museum serves the peoples and communities of the state and its visitors as South Dakota’s premier visual arts resource.
