Role:
As the Director, Data Usage Counsel, you will own and drive multidimensional legal counseling and thought leadership around data and its use at Splunk. You will build and integrate policies and program(s) that align data needs, collection, access, usage, management and principles across Splunk. You will identify and anticipate data issues as they relate to product development, customer insights and innovation, and play a critical role in Splunk's development of frameworks for data ethics and data responsibility.
You will report to, and partner closely with, the Senior Director, Data Protection to provide high-level strategic counseling around data usage at Splunk, and to build a comprehensive end-to-end strategy regarding customer data collection, access, and usage that will allow Splunk to innovate, maximize revenue, build trust with our customers, and lead the way for our industry.
You will manage a team, currently with 1 privacy analyst.
Responsibilities: The successful candidate will:
- Have a strong understanding of our corporate strategy and priorities, our technology and product roadmap, and our data practices;
- Work closely with teams across Splunk to develop an enterprise-wide strategy on customer data and telemetry usage, including engineering, customer success and sales;
- Develop policies and documentation (workflows and datamaps), in conjunction with other attorneys, product leaders and data governance professionals, around data collection, data harvesting, data access, and data usage;
- Collaborate with and influence leaders regarding Splunk internal data governance, including policies and processes (e.g., HR, Audit, etc.);
- Consider data issues that exist within Splunk, including within product development, further identifying and anticipating data issues on the horizon (e.g., privacy/localization by design, AI/ML model training and outcomes; AI/ML impact assessments);
- In collaboration with Splunk Global Impact, develop and launch a data ethics framework for Splunk thought leadership, data usage and product development;
- Track legislative landscape and consider practical effects of changes in laws and regulations, domestic and international and by industry, partnering with the business to drive awareness and adoption;
- Advise on contract language and privacy policy for customer data usage;
- Identify stakeholders across Splunk and collaborate closely with them in defining and integrating work (planned or in flight) to create a unified One Splunk approach on data usage; and
- Other responsibilities, as required.
Requirements:
- J. D. from an ABA-accredited law school and member in good standing in any state bar;
- At least 5-7 full years in product counseling and data privacy;
- Experience with compliance and product counseling program creation and implementation;
- Proficient in the requirements of key data protection compliance programs in the EU and US (e.g., GDPR, CCPA, HIPAA, FedRAMP, PCI-DSS, etc.);
- Familiarity with and strong interest in emerging AI issues;
- Possess exceptional legal capabilities and judgment;
- Strong familiarity with emerging technologies, data processing, cloud computing, and cloud security;
- Strong collaboration, organizational, and project management skills;
- Excellent written, oral, and interpersonal skills;
- Self-motivated, self-reliant, confident, and detail-oriented;
- Ability to interface and partner successfully with stakeholders and varying functions of Splunk;
- Proficiency in Google Docs, Sheets, Slides, Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint;
- A passion for data protection;
- Ability to adapt to a dynamic and fast-paced environment.

Please note that the base pay range is a guideline and for candidates who receive an offer, the base pay will vary based on factors such as work location as set out below, as well as the knowledge, skills and experience of the candidate. In addition to base pay, this role is eligible for incentive compensation and may be eligible for equity or long-term cash awards.

Base Pay Range
SF Bay Area, Seattle Metro, and New York City Metro Area
Base Pay Range: $236,000.00 - 324,500.00 per year
California (excludes SF Bay Area), Washington (excludes Seattle Metro), Washington DC Metro, and Massachusetts
Base Pay Range: $214,400.00 - 294,800.00 per year
All other cities and states excluding California, Washington, Massachusetts, New York City Metro Area and Washington DC Metro Area.
Base Pay Range: $198,400.00 - 272,800.00 per year
