POSITION TITLE: Assistant Chef
JOB CLASSIFICATION: hourly/non-exempt
REPORTS TO: Food Service Manager
POSITION SUMMARY: Assume responsibility for the preparation of meals for the Spring Lake Ranch community, with an emphasis on a healthy diet for all. Assist Food Service Manager in all aspects of kitchen management, including assuming leadership of the kitchen in the absence of the Food Service Manager. Be available to fill in for other cooks during sick or vacation time, including weekends and holidays.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Coordinates with Food Service Manager to prepare meals for the day and does necessary preparation for upcoming meals in support of other cooks and kitchen operation.
Assist in training clients and staff in appropriate Vermont State licensing kitchen protocol.
Cook weekly on assigned days for SLR community (up to 85 people).
Be available to cook on substitute basis in absence of other cooks.
Supervise SLR residents working as kitchen assistants.
Provide a clean, safe, supportive environment for residents to work daily.
Assist staff and residents with cooking skills, including teaching safety and hygiene.
Always maintain therapeutic/supportive atmosphere in kitchen.
Communicate with other staff any urgent or on-going kitchen or resident related needs.
Maintain primary kitchen and storeroom to meet Vermont Department of Health code regulations as a licensed kitchen.
Participate in holiday rotation.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Desire to work/participate in a therapeutic community with a mental health/substance abuse population.
Minimum 2 years professional cooking experience.
Be ServSafe certified or be willing to be certified.
Ability to work with minimal supervision/direction.
Excellent kitchen cleanliness habits.
Knowledge of nutrition and dietary special needs.
Desire to work closely with others.
Good teamwork skills.
Strong interpersonal skills.
Strong communication skills.
Able to follow direction.
Ability to lift and carry 40 lbs. This position consists of a combination of standing, kneeling, walking, and using stairs.
Driver’s license and good driving record.
SCHEDULE:
Weekends a must
Substitute shifts.
Holidays as needed.

Maintain resident/client privacy by keeping personal information confidential in accordance with federal HIPAA legislation and Spring Lake Ranch policies and procedures.
Willing to draw upon own personal talents, interests, and passions to develop special programming for the community and develop relationship with individuals.
Participate in holidays and other Ranch special events throughout the year.
Attend weekly staff and department meetings and staff development opportunities, meeting the licensing training requirements for position.
Crisis intervention and assistance as needed.
