Job Summary: Serves as the subject manner expert for coding staff and is a coding resource to other coders, physicians, and other staff. Job Responsibilities and Requirements: PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES Leads and/or coordinates coding operations, work assignments and daily priorities of assigned activities. Serves as a leader through modeling, mentoring and training assigned staff. Reviews claim denials related to coding and file appeals as appropriate. Tracks denials and reports trends to health information management leadership per department schedule. Audits productivity outcomes weekly and provides detail reports to HIM Coding leadership as appropriate. Monitors assigned work queues to ensure all records are charged in a timely matter. Performs a secondary coding review and coordinating with the clinical documentation and quality teams to ensure validation of Medicare Severity Diagnosis Related Group (MSDRG), patient safety indicators, and hospital acquired conditions are supported by physician documentation to support appropriate coding Provides on-going communication and continuing education between the coding staff to promote employee engagement and satisfaction. Coordinates workflow in the coding section to obtain low days in accounts receivable. Ensures charts are processed in a timely manner, monitors backlogs, and sets goals for staff, monitors accuracy and quality of coding. Generates routine and customizes reports as needed/requested. Performs other duties as assigned. EDUCATION High school diploma or equivalent EXPERIENCE Three years' experience PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS Frequent lifting/carrying and pushing/pulling objects weighing 0-25 lbs. Frequent sitting, standing, walking, reaching and repetitive foot/leg and hand/arm movements. Frequent use of vision and depth perception for distances near (20 inches or less) and far (20 feet or more) and to identify and distinguish colors. Frequent use of hearing and speech to share information through oral communication. Ability to hear alarms, malfunctioning machinery, etc. Frequent keyboard use/data entry. Occasional bending, stooping, kneeling, squatting, twisting and gripping. Occasional lifting/carrying and pushing/pulling objects weighing 25-50 lbs. Rare climbing.
