Job Summary:
This position is responsible for performing all duties related to the efficient, safe, and compliant collection of blood, blood products and urine. Provides services to neonate through geriatric populations. Works collaboratively as a member of the team and in alignment with the values of St. John’s Health.
Essential Functions:
1. Draws blood for specimen testing. Specimen collection to include neonate to geriatric populations, legal specimen collection and DOT collections.
2. LIS ordering and receiving.
3. Performs urine drug screen collections.
4. Assists in secretarial functions (phone, report distribution, maintaining complete and accurate records).
5. Disposes of blood or other biohazard fluids or tissue, in accordance with applicable laws, standards, or policies.
Job Requirements:
Minimum Education:
Required: High school diploma or equivalent. Certification as a phlebotomist required within an acceptable allotted time frame.
Preferred: Certification as phlebotomist.
Minimum Work Experience:
Required: Good interpersonal, communication, and customer service skills.
Preferred: 1 year phlebotomy experience.
Required Licenses: BLS required at time of hire.
Functional Demands:
Working Conditions: Hospital clinical laboratory and drawing room. Exposure to infectious, flammable, and caustic agents. Working in a small, enclosed area, subject to high stress. Must be on-site at the SJH campus or other facilities to fulfill the responsibilities of this role.
Physical Requirements: 80% of the time sitting and computer use. 20% of shift intermittent standing and walking. Ability to lift 15 pounds. Bending and reaching required. Manual dexterity essential. Must possess sight/hearing senses to meet the requirements of this position.
