JOB SUMMARY
Provides age and developmentally appropriate direct patient clinical care, encompassing both physical and psychological needs of the preemie, neonate, infant, adolescent and adult patient populations. Provides care with a focus on patient safety; initiates, implements and updates plan of care and patient/family education appropriately. Delivers high quality patient care through training and experience in Obstetrics and Level One Nursery, according to the Obstetrics Scope of Service. Able to scrub and/or circulate in the event of an emergency cesarean section. Adheres to and practices the SJH Corporate Compliance Program and participates in Performance Improvement activities.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Quality Patient Care
· Obtain & review all patient data using; observational, interviewing, interpretation & critical thinking skills in an age specific population and developmentally appropriate manner.
· Identifies risk factors and provides for patient safety. Implements measures to prevent injury from environmental hazards.
· Practices autonomously and consistently with professional nursing standards.
· Identifies changes in patient status, exercises critical thinking and independent judgment within the context of a multidisciplinary approach to patient care.
· Develops a plan of care that is unique to each patient's needs, evaluates patient response to plan of care and reflects measurable goals that are mutually set with the patient.
· Evaluates patient response to pain management interventions. Offers alternative pain management therapies.
· Demonstrates knowledge and awareness of medication action, side effects and protocols for use. Using 2 patient identifiers, gives medication safely and accurately according to policy and procedure.
· Organizes and prioritizes care of multiple patients with varying levels of acuity in a timely and efficient manner, as well as with a positive attitude.
· Manages specimen collection, handling and disposition according to hospital policy. Labels blood specimens at the patient's bedside.
· Addresses patient and family's spiritual and emotional needs utilizing a holistic approach.
· Uses supplies and equipment within safe parameters. Ensures equipment is functioning properly before use. Reports equipment malfunction following the appropriate reporting.
Patient And Family Education
· Assesses age and population specific and developmentally appropriate patient and family education needs.
· Assesses readiness to learn based on patient perception, education level and expectation of care.
· Initiates and incorporates patient and family education onto the plan of care.
· Provides clear information to assist the patient to make informed decisions.
· Encourages patients' active involvement in their care.
· Communicates updated status report and clear information to patient/family as appropriate, to make informed decisions.
Unit Specific Performance
· Ability to assess neonate at delivery and perform neonatal resuscitation.
· Ability to conduct postpartum assessments.
· Demonstrates the ability to be flexible, organized and function under stressful situations.
· Keeps the department clean, orderly and stocked daily.
· Completes all documentation, utilizing appropriate forms and systems.
· Demonstrates the ability to assess and assist with emergency situations.
· Functions in the charge nurse role as assigned.
· Completed and signs daily charge nurse form.
· Initiates and completed computerized Event Reports for unusual events consistently. Reports near misses.
JOB REQUIREMENTS
Minimum Education
Required: ASN
Preferred: BSN
Minimum Work Experience
Required: At least 2 years labor and delivery experience. Must be able to function independently.
Preferred: Recent high risk obstetric experience preferred. Postpartum, NICU or mother/baby experience preferred.
Required Licenses
Current RN license with the authority to practice in the State of Wyoming, BLS, NRP and documentation of completion of a Fetal Heart Monitoring class required. ACLS and STABLE preferred.
FUNCTIONAL DEMANDS
Working Conditions
Six bed LDRP with five swing rooms. Level one nursery. Rapidly changing census and patient acuity. Frequent stressful situations. Four, eight or twelve hour shifts; rotation to days/nights and weekends. Call hours and holidays required. Emergency situations may require staying after completion of scheduled shift. Must be on-site at the SJH campus or other facilities to fulfill the responsibilities of this role.
Physical Requirements
80% of shift spent walking and standing. Irregular meals/breaks. Must possess the ability to lift, push, pull and move patients, equipment, supplies. Must possess sight/hearing senses to meet job requirements. Ability to lift up to 50 pounds.
Salary : $36 - $46
