What are the responsibilities and job description for the Temporary, Part-Time Digital Archivist and Librarian position at St Olaf College Careers?
What You'll Do:
1. Archive management
- Determine the appropriate intellectual organization and digital storage structure for the Hong Kierkegaard Library Archives (includes analyzing the content of the source material and conducting historical research for the preparation of metadata descriptions).
- Design and manage digital collections by establishing the metadata schema and controlled vocabularies, and by exercising quality control of the software, equipment and metadata records.
- Create policies and procedures for managing born-digital materials for ingest, storage, preservation, organization, description, and access in accordance with accepted standards and practices to ensure the long-term preservation of collections.
2. Collection Development
- Manage new acquisitions, cataloging, and shelving for the special collections in conjunction with designated Rolvaag staff.
- Lead the efforts in computer expertise in digitization, including hardware/software for digital preservation, web archiving, cataloging, public delivery, and preservation.
- Evaluate the current structure and organization of the digital and physical collections and make recommendations moving forward.
3. Preservation
- Prepare the technical metadata (checksum, creation, modification and last access dates, file format, file size, etc.) of archives for transfer to preservation repository.
- Work to preserve the intellectual and artifactual value of physical archival material by determining the need for performing conservation procedures such as: document cleaning, repair, deacidification, and humidification.
4. Library and Administrative Duties
- Seek and write archival grants for the HKL.
- Serve as an HKL generalist providing assistance to St. Olaf faculty, students,
Kierkegaard scholars, alumni, and patrons regarding references, resources, and
any other archives and library questions. - Supervise student workers when the project pertains.
This position will have an application deadline date of June 30th, 2023.
Work Schedule:
Term: Year-round
Shift: Flexible work schedule 10-20 hours per/work during the days/hours of Monday - Friday, 10:00 am - 4:00 pm.
Who You Are:
Education: MLIS or equivalent with graduate-level archives coursework or post-graduate digital archives or records management training coursework.
Experience: Minimum 1 year of professional experience as a practicing digital archivist with demonstrated knowledge of archival processing techniques for born-digital archives.
Preferred Qualifications:
Education: MLIS with extensive coursework and experience in archives management.
Experience: Extensive knowledge with applying metadata standards and schema for descriptive, structural, and preservation metadata. The Digital Archivist is expected to stay current with emerging standards and practice in the fields of records management and archives, including Web archives and the application of digital forensics tools and techniques.
A Master’s degree in Library and Information Science and/or experience working in a special collection.
