Position Summary/Objective
The Shelter Supervisor promotes a culture of safety, hospitality, service, honor, and respect among our homeless guests, our staff, and volunteers, for the purpose of furthering the vision and mission of the St. Vincent de Paul Society. The Shelter Supervisor is responsible for ensuring that shelter staff members under supervision provide effective and efficient care-giving and direct and supportive services for shelter guests.
Essential Functions
- Oversee and coordinate shift operations on a daily basis. Direct and monitor the activities of employees under supervision on a daily basis.
- Responsible for the management of all employees under supervision, to include recommendations for hiring, performance and salary reviews, and termination of employment in coordination with the Shelter Manager, Shelter Program Manager, Director of Operations, and Human Resources.
- Assist with opportunities for staff development, continuing education and training for employees.
- Maintain a strict policy of confidentiality and propriety relative to guests, donors, and staff.
- Ensure that shift staff members provide the highest level of effective and efficient care-giving and direct and supportive services for shelter guests.
- Maintain a working knowledge of community resources available to guests.
- In coordination with Shelter Manager, provide guided tours through the shelter areas as requested.
- In coordination with the Program Manager, regularly monitor program expenditures to ensure compliance with the approved budget.
- Interact with and engage guests utilizing the services of the St. Vincent Gateway Shelters.
- Input guest data into HMIS database as required.
- Make regular rounds of the shelter to ensure security and order is maintained at all times.
- Provide supervision to volunteers relative to the roles they need to play in relating to the guests.
Job Requirements
- High School Diploma or equivalent
- 3-5 years Demonstrated, successful experience working with diverse populations including low-income and homeless individuals
- Experience with and working knowledge of domestic violence, substance abuse and mental health issues, and related community resources.
- Demonstrated, successful experience working with diverse populations

- Interpersonal skills
- Problem/Conflict Resolution Associate’s Degree or Bachelor’s Degree in Mental Health Technology, Case Management, or related field, preferred
