What are the responsibilities and job description for the Wean-to-Finish Area Manager position at Standard Nutrition Services?
Position Summary: This position has immediate responsibility for direction of personnel training, daily pig care, facility maintenance, and overall management of the sites assigned by the assigned Wean-to-Finish Service Manager. Responsibilities will encompass 15,000 - 25,000 nursery, finishing, and wean-to-finish spaces. Personnel include 2 - 4 full-time and variable part-time reporting teammates and some contracted services. Keys to this position are the abilities to organize, lead by example, and technically train team members.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities:
Direction and interaction to ensure the following:
- Timely submission of Human Resource and Production reports and forms
- Accurate and timely feed ordering, including budget decisions and compliance.
- Utilization of FAS
- Ordering and administration of medications, vaccinations, and supplies
- Keeping site expenses under control including vehicles and supply inventory.
- Correcting biosecurity issues and maintaining biosecurity control
- Maintenance, site care, manure control, and informing of major repairs needed for the site utilizing Barn Vista, email, Smartsheet, and other tools available for communication
- Ventilation and environment are properly set and functioning for optimal performance and welfare
- Maintain and update all records as required and meet all deadlines.
- Supporting, promoting, and adhering to company policies, procedures, and values
- Attendance at production meetings as scheduled
- Inspect power washing and disinfecting between groups including the loading chutes.
- Insurance of timely completion of the minimum Grow/Finish expectations list.
- Marketing – setting-up loads, selecting pigs, and loading-out
o Understand Smartsheet platform for submissions and information review
- Immediate response to alarm conditions when on-call
- Nutrient removal supervision
- Performing audits and service reports on a regular and timely basis. Utilize written correspondence to clearly state expectations and schedules.
Administrative
- Pig Flow – communication with source and destination sites as well as transportation coordination
- Task delegation and coordination of assigned team members and contract labor.
- Execution of time keeping, disciplinary procedures, and other employee management requirements.
- Training of procedures and practices including Animal Welfare Policies, Employee Handbooks, and Safety.
- Perform any site employee performance reviews with assistance of Service Manager
Additional Duties and Responsibilities:
- Regular, consistent attendance is essential to the function of this position.
- Follows all bio-security measures according to Bio-Security Policy.
- Follows all Animal Welfare policies and practices and informs management of any violations by staff.
- Follows all safety rules and practices and encourages coworkers to do the same.
- Complete performance reviews for staff.
- General farm maintenance.
- Other duties as may be assigned to fulfill responsibilities of this position/barn.

Working Conditions: Performance takes place almost exclusively on modern hog production facilities. Position is full-time, requiring an average of 45-50 hours per week with rotational weekends and holidays. Start time varies, but generally is prior to 5:00 AM. There will be some variation in work hours due to animal care and health, weather, employee shift schedules, special projects, and other concerns. There are noise levels that require hearing protection in some areas. Area manager must be available for alarm calls and other support responsibilities on scheduled weekend/holidays.
Personal Requirements: Ability to manage time and priorities in a fast paced, changing environment. Display a high level of professionalism and confidentiality and possesses the ability to exercise independent thinking and judgment. Demonstrate an impeccable reliability/dependability standard and response to alarm conditions.
Physical Requirements:
- Standing, walking and ability to be on feet while on concrete 8 to 10 hours per day.
- Frequent lifting of objects weighing 3-50 pounds
- Frequent bending, reaching, squatting, stooping, and kneeling.
- Frequent use of one or both hands/arms to grasp, push, pull.
- Ability to climb ladder approximately feet 15-25 feet in elevation.
- Occasional bending while lifting/pulling 50 pounds to 100 pounds of force to move an object with or without the assistance of another person.
- Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
