The Clinical and Translational Research Unit (CTRU) is the leading academic center for Stanford Medicine and provides state of the art ambulatory and laboratory research services for over 300 clinical trials and research projects. The center is a multidisciplinary organizational unit, whose mission is to streamline, accelerate, and promote the translation of basic discoveries into practical solutions that improve human health.

The CTRU is seeking a Research Phlebotomist/Nursing Assistant to p erform phlebotomy and duties related to the collection of clinical samples and assisting with the operational and administrative requirements to support the clinical trial operations at CTRU. The appointee will be involved in a range of duties including, but not limited to, phlebotomy, scheduling and organizing participant appointments, reception duties, registering participants, review participant medical orders, taking vital signs, and weight and height measurements, assisting with logistics, and serving as liaison with internal and external colleagues.

The Research Phlebotomist/Nurse Assistant reports to the CTRU Nurse Manager. The position will be primarily based at the CTRU locations in Palo Alto, but may on occasion require work at alternative CTRU sites.

This position places a heavy emphasis on attention to detail, and the ability to multitask efficiently and accurately is required. This position will require occasional late weekday and/or weekend work, depending upon operational needs.

Duties include:
  • Perform basic measurements and venipuncture on participants according to protocol after appropriate training.
  • Collect and manage study specimens according to protocol
  • Schedule and/or call subjects for appointments in the CTRU.
  • Perform clerical duties in the preparation of regulatory documents. Maintain all forms and documents, including consent forms and master subject logs. File all appropriate correspondence.
  • Administer standard study questionnaires and tests, score test measurements and questionnaires, and code data for computer entry. Perform quantitative review of forms, tests, and other measurements for completeness and accuracy.
  • Extract data from source documents for research studies as directed. Collect data and complete case report forms.
  • Monitor, order and maintain equipment and supplies.
  • Assist in the CTRU research kitchen with preparation of participant snacks and meals.
  • Work safely with potentially biohazardous biological specimens under the Stanford University Environmental Health & Safety guidelines.
  • Provide consistent, professional, and courteous customer service.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE (REQUIRED):

Two year college degree and one year of relevant experience or an equivalent combination of experience, education, and training.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (REQUIRED):

General knowledge of medical terminology.

CERTIFICATIONS & LICENSES:

Working toward certification(s) to perform basic patient measurements and tests, such as phlebotomy and EKG.

State of California Certified Phlebotomy Technician I (CPT I) Certificate.

Basic Life Support Certificate preferred.

Safe food handling course preferred.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS*:
  • Frequently stand, walk, twist, bend, stoop, squat and use fine light/fine grasping.
  • Occasionally sit, reach above shoulders, perform desk based computer tasks, use a telephone and write by hand, lift, carry, push, and pull objects that weigh up to 40 pounds.
  • Rarely kneel, crawl, climb ladders, grasp forcefully, sort and file paperwork or parts, rarely lift, carry, push, and pull objects that weigh 40 pounds or more.
