What are the responsibilities and job description for the Glassware Washer position at Stanford University?
This position is represented by SEIU Local 2007 and the collective bargaining agreement between the university and SEIU Local 2007 governs the terms and conditions of employment.
The Department of Genetics at Stanford University is seeking a Laboratory Glassware Washer to join the glassware/media preparation team. This is an entry level position however prior experience is helpful and some computer experience is also necessary.
Duties include the following:
- Glassware washing. Collect used glassware from labs; rinse or scrub residue as necessary; remove media labels when needed; load into washers. Prepare glassware for autoclaves (tin foil, tape, etc.) and load into machines. Use dryer when necessary. Sort glassware and return to labs, restocking the items in their proper place according to lab preference.
- Support facilities manager by keeping common areas clean and tidy, support upkeep of freezer facility, move furniture or equipment, dispose of unwanted materials, and decontaminate equipment when necessary.
- Support media maker and team members. Organize supplies and materials, obtain needed items from other locations in the department, label and deliver prepared media, record deliveries, keep media maker apprised of problems, and help keep facilities clean and orderly.
- Other duties may be assigned as necessary.
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Experience with autoclaves, glassware washing machines, and media preparation are highly desirable.
- Some experience using computers
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE (REQUIRED):
- Some familiarity with a laboratory environment helpful but not required. Will be trained to do this work.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (REQUIRED):
- Ability to follow detailed oral and/or written instructions (both verbal and written) instructions.
- Manual dexterity sufficient to perform the characteristic duties.
- Habits of cleanliness and neatness.
- Demonstrated punctuality and consistent attendance.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS*:
- Manual dexterity to perform assigned tasks.
- Write by hand, sort/file paperwork or parts.
- Frequently stand/walk, perform seated work, operate special machines
- Occasionally twist/bend/stoop/squat, reach /work above shoulders, light fine grasping.
- Lift/carry/push/pull objects that weigh up to 20 pounds.
- Rarely help move heavier items (e.g. chairs or lab equipment; packages of supplies; drums containing 2 to 15 gallons, depending on ability.
- In some Glassware Washing operations, occasionally may pull a wheeled Glassware cart that weighs approximately 100 pounds

WORKING CONDITIONS:
- Work occurs in a research laboratory environment. Depending on research, Lab Assistants may work in the vicinity of animals, chemicals, gasses or hazardous materials. Expected to follow all safety requirements and procedures, including wearing appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) if required.
