What are the responsibilities and job description for the Cost Accountant position at Starplast USA?
Job Summary:
The cost accountant will collaborate with the distribution centers and manufacturing sites to collect and provide accurate costing information to support the executive team and heads of department when setting budgets and strategic goals for the organization. They will also “own” Starplast’s Cost of Goods Sold (COGS) ensuring correct reporting of costs throughout the month and month end reporting.
Duties/Responsibilities include:
- Develop and maintain the cost accounting system within the current ERP system (IQMS).
- Update and maintain standard costs for all products.
- Roll costs for all products on an as needed basis.
- Ensure sure all Bill of Materials (BOMs) are complete, accurate and correct.
- Audit BOMs on a regular basis to ensure all relevant costs are captured.
- Analyze production costs and prepare regular reports comparing standard costs to actual production costs.
- Post inventory transactions into the system.
- Analyze any changes to the BOMs to determine the effect on margins.
- Coordinate with inventory cycle count teams to ensure inventory accuracy.
- Run on-hand inventory reports and compare with the general ledger.
- Analyze and investigate any significant inventory variances, favorable or unfavorable.
- Coordinate with operations for period end cut-off and any inventory adjustments.
- Perform inventory reconciliations at period end; investigate variances.
- Analyze costs and recommend cost-saving strategies.
- Become heavily involved in month-end and year-end closing.
- Post journal entries as needed.
- Perform Balance sheet account reconciliations.
Ad Hoc Reporting
- Cost benefit analysis reports
- Make-or-Buy cost analysis
- Profitability analysis by product or by product group
- Inventory valuation and discrepancy reporting
Other
- Stand in for corporate controller as needed.
Required Skills/Abilities:
- Developed interpersonal skills and the ability to build and improve trusting relationships
- Self-motivated and willing to take action with minimal management oversight
- Advanced in Microsoft Excel, Word and PowerPoint (Advanced Excel skills desired)
- Hands-on ERP experience required
- Ability to meet deadlines
- High attention to detail
Education and Experience:
- Bachelor's degree in accounting or finance
- 3 years recent cost accountant experience
