The Alaska Department of Fish and Game, Division of Wildlife Conservation is recruiting for a Wildlife Biologist 1 located in Palmer!
What you will be doing:
Under the supervision of the wildlife capture veterinarian your primary duty is to serve as the point-of-contact regarding submission of animal handling protocols, capture training, procurement of pharmaceuticals and veterinary supplies necessary for wildlife capture, as well as conducting data entry and data management. Wildlife biological specimen collection, necropsy assistance and laboratory work occurs in conjunction with wildlife capture and captive animal husbandry. Field work may be a compontent depending on experience but is highly seasonal, opportunistic and variable.

The job is located at the Matanuska Experiment Farm in Palmer, AK, which is situated in the beautiful Matanuska-Susitna Valley approximately 45 minutes drive north of Anchorage. The farm is located approximately 5 miles from the main ADF&G office in Palmer. The area offers unprecedented opportunities for outdoor recreation and has easy access to city conveniences in Anchorage, Palmer, and Wasilla.
We are looking for a candidate that possesses some or all of the following position-specific competencies (If you have any experience with the following, please document these in your application, cover letter and supplemental questions):
Experience managing and improving databases by data entry, quality control, and reporting.
Safely handle capture drugs, veterinary medical pharmaceuticals, laboratory chemicals, biological specimen, and biohazard materials.
Experience writing technical reports and preparing presentations.
Good verbal communication and interpersonal skills.Experience or training with capturing and immobilizing mammals.
Experience, course work or training recognizing parasites, common disease conditions, and behaviors of wildlife.
Must be physically fit enough to travel in fixed-wing aircraft, helicopters, and boats for capture operations and necropsies.

* A valid driver's license is required.
*Due to the nature of the duties requiring access to federally regulated Controlled *Substances, if offered the position, you will be required to sign an affidavit attesting that you do not have a conviction or pending charge involving misuse of a controlled substance. *Experience managing and improving databases by data entry, quality control, and reporting.
*Must have or be able to obtain a valid Alaska Driver’s license.
*Must have or be eligible to be certified in First Aid / CPR training.
*Occasional weekend and evening work as well as overnight travel may be required
A bachelor's degree from an accredited college in biology, a branch of biology, limnology, biometrics, oceanography, forestry, or natural resource management.
Substitution:
A bachelor's degree from an accredited college that includes or is supplemented by the following credit hours will substitute for the degree in a specific field:
• at least 24 semester hours (36 quarter hours) in biology, a branch of biology, limnology, biometrics, oceanography, forestry, or natural resource management (excluding courses that focus on agricultural husbandry techniques, human population dynamics, or the design and manipulation of landscapes), of which 16 semester hours (24 quarter hours) are upper division courses; and
• at least 12 semester hours (16 quarter hours) in any combination of two or more of the following: chemistry, physics, mathematics, statistics, geology, hydrology, or GIS.
Special Note:
"Upper division courses" means courses that are specialized, in-depth and advanced. Such courses emphasize problem-solving, analytical thinking skills, and theoretical applications, with depth and rigor in a discipline's theories and methods; specialization in a particular field or profession; refinement of general education; and/or development of specific intellectual and professional skills. Upper division courses are commonly identified in college catalogs as 300 level and higher.
Some positions may require training in specialized areas such as hydroacoustics, microscopic analysis, underwater research, or fish habitat restoration or enhancement.
An individual who will complete the educational requirements and obtain the required bachelor's degree within six months may apply and be considered for a vacancy. Such applicants may be given a conditional job offer but may not be appointed until receipt of the required degree has been documented.
