The Floor RN for the Arizona State Veteran Home - Flagstaff is responsible for carrying out all geriatric nursing care, treatment and services in a professional and prescribed manner while providing a safe, therapeutic and hygienic environment. In this role you will be providing nursing care for infirm geriatric residents, overseeing and training staff in resident care and observing and assessing residents’ behavior and physical conditions. In the event the Geriatric Nurse II (Floor RN) is the charge nurse, you will oversee the functions of all licensed staff on the unit as well as the Certified Nursing Assistants. As an employee with the Arizona Department of Veterans’ Services you will learn, implement and monitor the Arizona Management System (AMS) methods.
As an Registered Nurse at the Flagstaff Veterans' Home you will:
- Administer medication and perform treatments on an assigned unit, as ordered by the physician and within scope of license
- Receive and deliver a variety of information regarding the residents’ medical, social, functional and other needs
- Participate in the receiving and giving of shift reports.
- Communicate with residents, family and staff as necessary to ensure the resident receives appropriate care from the interdisciplinary team
- Perform the initial admission nursing assessment on a newly admitted resident; assists with the development of the Minimum Data Set (MDS) assessments, ongoing quarterly reviews and care plans
- Maintain appropriate clinical and administrative documentation regarding diagnosis, assessments, treatment and summary of client progress
- Lead and perform limited supervision of subordinate staff and assists as needed with direct resident care for the completion of Activities of Daily Living (ADLs) including bathing, dressing, eating, toileting, personal hygiene mobility
- Conduct and participate in in-service training and staff development programs for regularly employed staff and other duties as assigned.
- Utilize AMS concepts and tools for problem solving and continuous work/process improvements and efficiency
- Other duties as assigned, as related to the position
Knowledge of:
- Gerontological/geriatric nursing theory and practices
- Residents’ condition and changing medical/physical/psychological care needs
- Effects of the aging process
- Practices and procedures of team nursing
- Practices and procedures of developing treatment plans for resident/patient care
- Practices and procedures of pharmacology and medicines
- Federal, state and agency laws, rules and regulations governing general professional nursing practices and the security and control of medical supplies and medications and dispensing thereof
Skill in:
- Professional nursing methods and techniques
- Observing and assessing behavior and progress of patients
- Applying and interpreting state and agency laws and regulations governing geriatric nursing practices
- Developing and carrying out patient care plans within a team nursing concept
- Effective oral and written communication
- Building interpersonal relationships
Ability to:
- Learn, implement and monitor AMS methods, and to use AMS concepts and tools for problem solving and continuous work/process improvement and efficiency
One or more years of Skilled Nursing Facility or Long-Term Care Experience preferred.
- Current Negative TB skin test (Mantoux skin test) within the last twelve months or a written statement from a physician, physician’s assistant or a registered nurse practitioner indicating freedom from Tuberculosis, if in the past has had a positive skin test or Tuberculosis
- Must be able to obtain and retain a fingerprint clearance card issued by the Arizona Department of Public Safety
- Current or temporary license to practice as a RN nurse in the State of Arizona
- Current CPR card that was obtained by physical assessment
- This position requires the ability to drive on State business. Requires possession of and ability to retain a current, valid state-issued driver's license appropriate to the assignment. Employees who drive on State business are subject to driver's license record checks, must maintain acceptable driving records and must complete any required driver training (see A.AC. R2-10-207.11).
