Program Overview

The Developmental Disabilities Defendant Program operates on the campus of Florida State Hospital in Chattahoochee and at Sunland in Marianna under the auspices of The State of Florida Agency for Persons with Disabilities (APD). The Developmental Disabilities Defendant Program (DDDP) is dedicated to empowering persons with developmental disabilities charged with a felony crime to:

1.         Acquire the skills and support that will prepare them for success in their future environments.

2.         Acquire the skills needed to become competent to stand trial.

 

Position Summary

This is a skilled position requiring the incumbent to work in several trades’ areas in maintenance and repair of buildings and/or equipment. Incumbent must possess and perform essential skills required to assist and enhance services in the upkeep and maintenance of the physical plant, fleet, grounds, etc.  These skills include general maintenance, environmental or housekeeping skills, groundskeeping, painting, etc. 

Facility maintenance includes install, maintain or repair valves, sinks, wash bowls, sewers, electrical or lighting fixtures; replacing filters/cleaning of HVAC and other mechanical systems, minor carpentry, cement, brick work, painting, grounds cleanup, pressure washing, moving furniture/property, inspecting doors, locks, windows, etc. to minimize hazards and assists with special projects as needed.   

Check equipment routinely for preventive maintenance, safety, and sanitation.

Monitor appropriate use of tools, supplies and equipment to maximize safety and security; inventory items as needed.

Maintain a safe, secure, and clean environment. Perform other related duties as required.

Working hours: Monday through Friday 7:00AM- 3:30PM CST (8:00 AM – 4:30 PM) EST

The position headquarters is at Pathways in Marianna, Florida.  Some travel to DDDP-in Chattahoochee, Florida will be required. 

 

Knowledge, skills, and abilities, including utilization of equipment, required for the position:

•     Knowledge of principles and techniques of skilled building trade or mechanical repair work.

•           Skill in using tools and equipment for maintenance and repair work.

•           Knowledge of safety procedures required in maintenance and repair work

•           Ability to work independently.

•           Ability to perform a variety of skilled trades function.

•           Ability to take accurate measurements.

•           Ability to follow instructions

•           Ability to speak clearly and correctly to individuals and groups.

•           Ability to plan, organize and coordinate work assignments.

•           Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others. 

•           Ability to lift up to 40 pounds.

 

The Work You Will Do  

DDDP is a forensic facility working with individuals with disabilities in a secure setting.  These individuals have been adjudicated by the courts as incompetent to proceed to trial and have significant behavioral and psychiatric issues.  DDDP provides rehabilitative, vocational, and daily living skills training to the individuals served which allows for a smooth transition back into a non-secure residential or community setting. 

 

Minimum Qualifications

•           Two years of experience in the maintenance and repair of buildings, plumbing or electrical or mechanical equipment; or

•           Vocational/technical training in mechanical repair or one of the building trades can substitute at the rate of 720 classroom hours for experience.

•           A valid driver’s license. License suspended or revoked for any reason, work permits (Business purpose/ Employment/Education only license) and some types of restricted license are not acceptable. Licenses that have “Corrective Lenses Restricted,” are acceptable, provided the driver wears the corrective lenses while operating the vehicle.

Retirement funds are also required to be in the Direct Deposit Program.

 

Background Screening Requirement

It is the policy of the Florida Agency for Persons with Disabilities that applicants for employment undergo Level 2 employment screening in accordance with the requirements of Chapter 435, Florida Statutes, as a condition of employment or being permitted to serve as a volunteer.
