Positions in the Retirement Claims Examiner series perform and/or supervise work involving the examination, development, adjudication, authorization and reconsideration of claims for benefits provided by the State of Hawaii Employees' Retirement System.
Level IV examines, develops and adjudicates an extensive range of claims for benefits or allowances; authorizes the payment or nonpayment of money to the claimant; conducts pre-retirement and informational sessions throughout the State; counsels individuals on the System's retirement benefits and services; recommends changes in statutes, procedures and other areas to improve the benefit claims process; and performs other related duties as assigned.

To qualify, you must meet all of the following requirements:
Legal Authorization to Work:
The State of Hawaii requires all persons seeking employment with the government of the State shall be citizens, nationals, or permanent resident aliens of the United States, or eligible under federal law for unrestricted employment in the United States.
Basic Education/Experience: Bachelor's degree from an accredited four-year college or university.
Specialized Experience: Two and one-half (2-1/2) years for Level IV of progressively responsible professional experience in the analysis, verification, clarification, examination, investigation, adjudication, and/or authorization of claims for payment of benefits to individuals in accordance with appropriate regulations and laws. Such experience must have:
A) Demonstrated the ability to gather and evaluate pertinent facts and evidence, and to apply and interpret laws, rules, regulations and precedents; and
B) Provided knowledge of claims analysis and adjudication, the principles and eligibility provisions and general legal provisions governing the adjudication of claims for payment of benefits.
Such experience may have been gained through employment in one or a combination of the following areas:
A) Retirement, old-age insurance, survivor benefits or pension programs administered by private companies or governmental agencies;
B) Worker's compensation; disability and/or death compensation; disability insurance, retirement, or pension programs administered by private companies or governmental agencies; or
C) Unemployment insurance benefit programs.
At least one (1) year of the required experience must have been at the independent worker level and involved moderately difficult adjudications or substantive determinations requiring a broad working knowledge of the various benefits claims processes.
