The Idaho Department of Fish and Game is seeking a Fisheries Staff Biologist in the Anadromous Fish Screen and Habitat Program. The selected candidate will be stationed in Salmon, Idaho. This biologist will serve as part of an interdisciplinary team that works to improve or restore fish habitat and passage for native fishes including Chinook Salmon and steelhead as well as Westslope Cutthroat Trout, Bull Trout, and other species. Program efforts strive to improve survival, growth, and status of these important native species through improvement of riparian and aquatic habitat conditions. This position’s primary responsibility will be to administer and lead the habitat restoration portion of this program by supervising staff, identifying and prioritizing restoration projects, overseeing monitoring efforts, participating on collaborative teams, working with private landowners, and planning and coordinating efforts with engineers, contractors, and other staff.

Responsibilities include:
- Supervising 2-3 full-time employees and several temporary employees directly or indirectly.
- Applying for grants, administering grants, and managing budgets.
- Collaborating with internal and external scientists to gauge the effectiveness of conservation actions.
- Communicating, engaging, and working collaboratively with private landowners, irrigation districts, road management agencies, and livestock interests to facilitate conservations actions and outcomes.
- Engaging with engineers, permitting entities, and contractors to oversee and facilitate the design, permitting, and implementation of habitat restoration and passage projects.
- Compiling data, write, edit, and finalize project completion reports for submission to funding entities.
- Interpreting life history, habitat, and research data for various fish species.
- Using databases to enter, manage, and query datasets.
- Using statistical and mapping programs to organize, interpret, and display information.
- Writing scientific manuscripts.
- Communicating information to a wide variety of audiences.
- Acting as a department representative on technical working groups
- Coordinating with other Salmon Regional Staff to complete a wide variety of fisheries surveys or management actions.
- Contributing to other general department activities associated with fisheries and wildlife management in the Salmon Region and statewide.
Minimum Qualifications: (These qualifications are required.)
- Experience demonstrating good knowledge of fish, wildlife, conservation biology, plant ecology and/or habitat management practices. (Typically gained by possession of a master’s degree in Fisheries, Wildlife, or Natural Resource Management and two years of professional experience such as habitat and resource management or fish and wildlife population management OR a bachelor's degree in Fisheries, Wildlife, or Natural Resource Management and four years of professional experience such as habitat and resource management or fish and wildlife population management).
- Experience evaluating the impact of land use practices and natural processes on habitats, developing, and interpreting statistical data and formulas used in biological research (Typically gained by at least two years of professional work experience providing input into these areas.)
- Experience evaluating and interpreting environmental documents, state, and federal regulations, and providing a written and oral analysis of findings. (Typically gained by at least two years of professional work experience providing input on methodology, gathering, and analyzing fisheries data, and providing written and oral analysis of findings. Field research in a fisheries management-related master's degree thesis program is typical at this level).
The ideal candidate will have a minimum of at least two years of experience as Regional Fisheries Biologist, Fisheries Research Biologist, Senior Fisheries Research Biologist, or equivalent. They will also have experience working in multi-agency collaborative groups, technical teams, etc. Additional consideration may be given at the time of interview to candidates who have this experience.
