What are the responsibilities and job description for the Tourism Supervisor position at State of Louisiana?

This position is located at the State Capitol Welcome Center in Baton Rouge, LA.

The candidate must have at least two years of experience leading individual and group tours within a tourism or hospitality environment.

The candidate must have strong verbal and written communication skills and be comfortable with speaking to a variety of stakeholders including elected officials, legislative staff members, school groups, and leisure travelers.  

The State Capitol Tour desk is a high paced work environment, and the ideal candidate should be highly organized and able to adapt to changes in the daily legislative schedule.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Four years of experience in tourism information work, public relations, customer service, or teaching.
 
SUBSTITUTIONS:
College training will substitute for the required experience on the basis of thirty semester hours for one year of experience.
 
A baccalaureate degree will substitute for all of the required experience
 
NOTE:
Any college hours or degree must be from an accredited college or university.
FUNCTION OF WORK:
To supervise staff engaged in providing information to tourists.
 
LEVEL OF WORK:
Supervisor.
 
SUPERVISION RECEIVED:
General from Tourism Information Assistant Regional Coordinator or higher level staff.
 
SUPERVISION EXERCISED:
Direct over Tourism Information Counselors 1-3, Custodians and part-time workers.
 
LOCATION OF WORK:
Department of Culture, Recreation and Tourism, Office of Tourism, Welcome Centers - statewide.
 
JOB DISTINCTIONS:
Differs from Tourism Information Counselor 3 by the presence of supervisory responsibility.
 
Differs from Tourism Information Assistant Regional Coordinator by the absence of responsibility for assisting the regional coordinators in planning and implementing programs involving other welcome centers.
EXAMPLES BELOW ARE A BRIEF SAMPLE OF COMMON DUTIES ASSOCIATED WITH THIS JOB TITLE. NOT ALL POSSIBLE TASKS ARE INCLUDED.
 
Supervises staff and operations of assigned Welcome Center, including administratively overseeing record-keeping (visitor count, time and attendance, supply inventory), preparing time sheets, scheduling work, purchasing supplies, and overseeing center maintenance.
 
Greets tourists and provides directive and descriptive information; suggests points of interest.
 
Answers questions from visitors, by phone, and by mail regarding the state, its history and its culture.
 
Trains new employees.
 
Conducts safety meetings and staff meetings.
 
Conducts presentations: gives speeches or presents film and slide shows to area clubs and organizations utilizing extensive knowledge of the state.
 
Represents the Office of Tourism at functions.
 
Provides information to the local press on local, national, and international events.
 
Participates in and represents the state at seminars, workshops, and travel shows; serves on committees.
 
Assists Tourism Assistant Coordinators and Regional Coordinators in planning conferences, arranging accommodations for representatives of travel industry, and coordinating other promotional activities such as Tourism Week, arts and crafts, etc.
 
Responsible for safety compliance under the ORM and the Department's guidelines.
 
Attains CPR certification and becomes recertified annually.
