As an Assistant Military Fire Chief, you will lead firefighters in emergency responses at the Bangor International Airport and at Air National Guard facilities. You will be given the opportunity to take command during emergency situations leading teams of responders to eliminate hazardous situations and save personnel from fires and other dangerous conditions. Primary responsibilities include:
- Sets up and commands a command structure during training or actual emergency situations that integrates a combination of facilities, equipment, personnel, procedures, and communications.
- Direct firefighting and rescue operations, issues maneuver directives, and protect lives and property.
- Communicates status of response to City of Bangor, Air National Guard, and Bangor International Airport leadership.
- Investigate fires to determine causes.
- Directs, monitors, and evaluates classroom and practical firefighting and rescue training programs of assigned crews to ensure optimal firefighting and rescue proficiency.
- Plans, conducts, and participates in specialized training drills and exercises to maintain established standards of proficiency for firefighting personnel.
- Assists Air National Guard Wing leadership with the collection and analysis of established data points to develop and conduct self-assessment activities, identify deficiencies and areas of improvement, and to document compliance with national standards and accredited fire fighter certification program.
- Oversees and coordinates Air National Guard Wing and Geographical Support Unit (BSU) plans to ensure operational readiness and compliance with established agency objectives.
- Oversees the establishment of objectives, priorities, and daily work schedules to ensure unit readiness.
- Implements and complies with human resource laws, policies, procedures, and practices such as: AA/EEO, recruitment, employment, position classification, performance appraisals, training, discipline, contract administration, human resource components of security protocols of agency information security and confidentiality policies, and employee safety.
Skills or knowledge required:
- Knowledge of applicable laws, rules, regulations, policies, and procedures.
- Knowledge of administrative principles and practices.
- Knowledge of supervisory principles, practices, and procedures.
- Knowledge of firefighting and rescue vehicles and equipment.
- Knowledge of transmission, broadcasting, operation of telecommunications/alarm systems, vehicle operations, and radio procedures in aircraft movement areas.
- Knowledge of Air National Guard and Air Force regulations, directives, standards, and operating instructions.
- Knowledge of classroom and practical training programs for firefighting and rescue personnel.
- Knowledge of business and management principles involved in strategic planning, resource allocation, human resources, leadership, and coordination of people and resources.
- Ability to communicate and write effectively.
- Ability to write clearly and effectively.
Minimum qualifications:
Seven (7) years experience in aircraft and structure firefighting and crash-rescue operations. Experience must include four (4) years in directing and supervising firefighting operations.
