JOB OVERVIEW – The Chief General Counsel for The Department of Corrections (DOC) will provide legal advice and support to the Executive Team. The position involves serving as a member of the Executive Team, offering legal advice when requested, and representing the department in various forums. The Chief General Counsel will research and prepare formal legal opinions, coordinate with other chief legal counsels and the Attorney General's Office and provide updates on recent legal decisions that affect department operations. Additionally, the Chief General Counsel will provide employment and contract advice, supervise attorneys, and act as the lead legal support during union negotiations and significant contract negotiations. The Chief General Counsel will also be responsible for drafting bill proposals and amendments, providing legal analysis on legislative proposals, and may appear before legislative committees on legal issues related to the Department. They will also oversee preparing and submitting statutorily mandated reports to state and federal entities.
QUALIFICATIONS - Juris Doctor from ABA-accredited law school. Admission to and maintenance of licensure from the State Bar of Montana. Two years of specialized law and lead litigation experience.
