The Recreation Technician is a frontline position supporting the recreating public. This announcement will result in the hiring of two recreation technicians with both reporting to the Lake Elmo office. One of the two positions will have responsibilities to work at both Lake Elmo and Pictograph State Parks. Both positions provide general operational support in a variety of recreational offerings at state parks, fishing access sites, wildlife management areas and along river corridors. This can include day use areas, campgrounds, water access and amenities, historic sites, trail programs, park offices, visitor centers and entrance gates, among others. Work is performed in both indoor and outdoor environments. They will frequently work in adverse outdoor conditions including temperature extremes, snow and rain, dust and insect infested areas. The incumbents will work with the public and inform the public of site rules and regulations. The positions will require some daytime travel. The incumbents will be required to work odd hours, weekends, and holidays. On occasion the incumbents may work in other recreation units in Region 5.
Billings is the largest community in the region with a growing population exceeding 166,000. The city is home to two major hospitals, two colleges, and an international airport. Billings and the surrounding areas have activities such as indoor and outdoor concerts, live theatre venues, archery and shooting ranges, many personal interest organizations, festivals, and art walks; there is something for many interests. The area neighbors Yellowstone National Park and Bighorn Canyon National Recreation Area and a variety of local, state, and national attractions including parks with historic significance such as Chief Plenty Coup Park, Pompeii's Pillar, and Custer Battlefield.
Job Duties:
Duties include monitoring recreation sites by foot or vehicle, maintaining extensive public contact, assisting with interpretive and educational programs, collecting and processing fees and visitation data, assisting with the web-based reservation system and carrying out light-duty maintenance duties. Responsible for pavilion checkins and check-outs, collecting fees, working the ticket booth, staffing the park office and visitor centers, answer visitor questions related to site resources, facilities, and surrounding area sites and opportunities, greet visitors and work with maintenance staff to accomplish proper groundskeeping duties. Requires computer literacy and ability to operate a computer. Perform public safety duties. Advising visitors of site use rules and regulations, report violations observed to superiors for follow up. Monitor visitor use impacts on historic, cultural, natural, and recreational resources and advise visitors on best practices to minimize impacts. Provide emergency assistance or medical aid as appropriate within training. Prepare incident reports. Light-duty maintenance responsibilities including grounds keeping, janitorial services and minor repairs. Aid persons with disabilities when needed. Perform other related duties as assigned and potentially assist other recreational staff at sites including Cooney and Chief Plenty Coups state parks, in addition to other fishing access and wildlife management areas in Region 5.

Minimum Qualifications:
Graduation from high school or equivalent education. One year of college or vocational training experience in park and recreation management, interpretive visitor center, or closely related setting is preferred; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Required at time of application: General knowledge of basic customer service and safe work habits.
Ability to: educate and inform visitors on compliance with rules and regulations and State laws; collect fees and make change; sell merchandise and account for monies collected; read, maintain, and prepare records and reports; and assist visitors in emergency situations. Daily interaction with site visitors requires effective communication and public relations skills.
