Why does the job exist?
Interviews are anticipated to be conducted within two weeks of closing date.
Position will provide supervision to embrace the overall security of the facility in all areas and provide leadership to subordinates. Position will maintain an overall safe and secure working environment for staff and living environment for inmates.
How does it get done?
- Review daily staff rosters randomly to ensure sufficient staffing levels of shifts
- Ensure appropriate use of overtime, and compliance with the collective bargaining agreement
- Ensure that subordinate staff comply with policies and post orders
- Investigate staff misconduct and provide findings to management

Minimum Qualification
High School Diploma or Equivalency and eight (8) years of experience in an adult correctional setting, of which two (2) years must have been as a Correctional Officer Captain.
Employment Requirements
This position is safety sensitive. Employment is subject to a pre-employment and random drug testing in accordance with all terms and conditions of federal and state rules and regulations regarding alcohol and/or drug testing. Must have successfully completed the New Mexico Corrections Academy. Must possess and maintain a valid New Mexico Driver's License. The applicant must be a U.S. citizen, must be at least 18 years old, have a least a high school education or its equivalent, be of good moral character, have not been convicted of a felony in the courts of this or any state or in the federal courts, and successfully pass any physical and aptitude examination the department may require. Employment is subject to a pre-employment background investigation and is conditional pending results.
Working Conditions
State of New Mexico employees may be impacted by the Public Health Order dated August 12, 2022, which requires facilities licensed or certified by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services ("CMS"), including all hospital types, long-term care facilities, nursing homes, hospice facilities and rehabilitation facilities, as well as assisted living facilities and adult day care settings, to adhere to all COVID-related requirements prescribed by CMS, including, but not limited to masking and staff vaccination.
In addition, employees working in State correctional facilities who have the potential for direct or indirect exposure to inmates are required to be vaccinated against COVID-19.
Work is performed in an adult prison environment, which includes daily contact with and supervision of inmates. May be required to work odd hours, overtime, holidays, and weekends.
