As per G.S. 126-5, this Position is designated as Exempt Managerial and is not subject to the State Human Resources Act. This position is subject to the State Government Ethics Act. The Aquarium Director is responsible for effectively and efficiently managing the operations, budget and staff of the North Carolina Aquarium at Pine Knoll Shores.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Managing all activities at the public aquarium such as staff selection, development and supervision, strategic planning and goal setting, purchasing equipment and supplies.
  • Managing the budget and establishing priorities, overseeing technical aquatic life systems.
  • Providing leadership and direction for educational exhibits, programs and special activities.
  • Providing leadership on physical improvements, expansion planning and supervising capital improvement projects.
  • Serving as the liaison with media, community groups, businesses and public interest groups and provides assistance to the North Carolina Aquarium Society in fund raising and development, and proactive marketing and publicizing of aquarium projects andprograms.

The North Carolina Aquarium at Pine Knoll Shoresis located 6 miles from Morehead City, NC, on Bogue Banks and sits adjacent to Bogue Sound. A living collection of over 2,500 animals in 90,000 square feet of exhibit space attracts and engages over 400,000 visitors each year. The Aquarium sits within the Roosevelt Natural Area, a state park of maritime forest and wetland ecosystems.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies

  • Demonstrated knowledge of public standards and trends at an aquarium, zoo, museum, park, nature center or related facility, as well as principles of marine ecology, marine biology, and/or science education.
  • Demonstrated experience in budget management, which includes monitoring budget and receipts, implementing annual plans, and/or procuring goods and services to meet program needs.
  • Demonstrated experience in conservation and informal education in an aquarium, zoo, museum, park, nature center or related facility.
  • Demonstrated ability in interacting with leadership, community groups, advisory committees, researchers and/or the general public.
  • Demonstrated skills in strategic planning and goal setting.
  • Demonstrated experience leading and managing staff, such as work planning, performance evaluation and staff coaching.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

Bachelors degree in marine science, biology, zoology, science education or related field from an appropriately accredited institution and six years of management and administrative/supervisory experience at an aquarium, museum, zoo or related facility; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
