The Washington State Ferry (WSF) system is essential to Washington's transportation network, linking communities on both sides of Puget Sound and the San Juan Islands. There are over 400 sailings each day on 10 ferry routes. WSF transports nearly 17 million passengers a year and has more than 1,800 employees. Employees perform a variety of duties on vessels, in terminals, at the maintenance facility, and at the Seattle headquarters.

The Opportunity
WSDOT is currently seeking Transportation Planning Specialist 3 to conduct studies involving data collection, programming, analysis, and reporting in support of planning programs and projects for service planning and long-range planning in the Planning, Customer, and Government Relations department at Washington State Ferries. Duties also include coordinating interdepartmental teams within WSF and collaborating with local transportation agency partners to support decision-making processes through data visualization and communication.

What to Expect
Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, you/the Transportation Planning Specialist 3 will:


  • Conduct service and planning studies.
  • Analyze ridership, on-time performance, reservation utilization, customer demographic and origin/destination information, and service development data.
  • Manage vessel assignment system.
  • Develop methods and tools for key components of sailing schedule development.
  • Develop methods and tools for monitoring the performance of sailing schedules.
  • Prepare reports, visualizations, briefings, and presentations on findings and results.

Qualifications
To be considered for this opportunity, the following are required:
  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering, planning, data science, public policy, or related field. A master’s degree in a related field may substitute for the required experience.
  • One (1) year as a Transportation Planning Specialist 2 or equivalent. OR
  • Two (2) years of experience in a related field.
It is preferred that qualified candidates also have:
  • Master's degree in engineering, planning, data science, public policy, or related field.
  • Skills in database management including working familiarity with Tableau, Cognos, Excel, SQL, GIS, and other analytical software tools to collect data and product reports and graphics.
