About this position
As a Caretaker (Custodian 2), you will primarily work indoors at various buildings during morning shifts with routine starting and ending times. The selected will perform general housekeeping duties on the Capitol Campus and other off Campus areas. Custodians may be assigned to other shifts to accommodate Legislative Session events or activities. You may also be required to work alternative shifts to attend training, or other informational meetings or to accommodate facilities activities and events. This position will use prescribed cleaning products and chemicals on a daily basis which may require the use of protective equipment. Tools and equipment are provided along with uniforms. 
 
Who we are looking for:
DES is our customer's custodial service provider of choice. We are seeking a Caretaker to provide housekeeping duties on the Capitol Campus and other off campus areas as assigned. You will ensure our Capitol Campus facilities are cleaned uniformly and to appropriate standards. The high performance you provide in the buildings you clean for our customers is so vital and essential in allowing them to be productive in performing their jobs. Please note that this is a physically demanding position. You will need to be able to lift up to 50 lbs. or more; be able to stand, walk, stoop, bend, reach, push, pull, kneel; work with a backpack vacuum weighing up to 12lbs on your back for 8 hours, and use other equipment safely as designed. You will receive a uniform which will need to be worn while working and be able to use prescribed chemicals on a daily basis which may require the use of protective equipment. Other job requirements are working in and around building occupants, visitors or other trades personnel; exercise workplace discretion, respecting the privacy and confidentiality of information you may be see, be consistence in attendance and remain in designated work areas during normal work hours. An essential part of this position is to be courteous to public visitors, fellow workers, callers, building occupants, and supervisory and management personnel with whom you may come in contact.

This position is recognized as Continuity of Operations Plans (COOP) Designation – for Disaster or Emergency Recovery. This means that this position may be required to report to work during extreme weather events, including snow events, manmade or natural disaster response, civil unrest, or other emergencies to provide custodial support as needed.

About the Division
The Buildings & Grounds Division (B&G) is responsible for the Capitol Campus and Department of Enterprise Services (DES) managed building operations, stewardship, and historic preservation. B&G provides service to over 42 agencies, maintains, operates and preserves the 486-acre state Capitol Campus in Olympia, including more than 28 buildings, 18 public monuments, over 6,000 parking stalls, four state parks and a 260-acre lake. B&G executes these responsibilities through the following service programs: Facilities Operations, Grounds Operations, Leadership and Admin, Maintenance & Repairs, Support Services (Custodial).

Housekeeping duties on the Capitol Campus, Park Restrooms and other Off Campus areas
  • Respond to spills or other immediate cleaning needs during the day
  • Cleaning and or restocking, trash removal, glass cleaning, stocking custodial pantries, unlocking buildings 
  • Outdoor activities include cleaning of ashtrays, entry ways, putting down deicer and shoveling snow during winter months
  • Collecting trash using an assigned vehicle in campus parks
Event Support set ups for event support and other tasks assigned
  • Set ups of tables, chairs and other items as needed
  • Set up of trash and recycle containers, and emptying of them as they fill
Daily recording time worked in Mainsaver and other duties as assigned
  • Use the computer daily to enter time in FMMS work using assigned Work Order #'s and activity codes
Required Qualifications:
  • High school diploma or GED
    AND
  • At least six (6) months in custodial, general or building maintenance, grounds keeping, or semi-skilled carpentry, electrical and/or plumbing repair work
  • The physical ability to do required - which includes lifting up to 50lbs or more
  • Ability to perform job duties in a safe and effective manner
  • Must have valid driver's license free from serious traffic violations
  • Must be able to read, write and speak English
  • Must be able to meet the job's requirement of working with a 12lbs. vacuum cleaner on your back for your 8 hour shift
  • Must be able to stand, walk, stoop, bend, reach, push, pull, kneel, work with other equipment safely as designed
  • Must wear a uniform and use prescribed chemicals on a daily basis which may require the use of protective equipment
  • Must be able to work in a crowd, and in high pressure work environments
  • Must be able to work in and around building occupants, public visitors or other trades personnel
  • Must exercise discretion in the workplace, respecting the privacy and confidentiality of information found while working
  • Be consistent and regular in attendance and remain in designated work areas during normal work hours
  • Be courteous to public visitors, fellow workers, callers, building occupants, and supervisory and management personnel with whom they come in contact

NOTE: Temporary inability to use prescribed chemicals or equipment will require documented medical evidence and, if not resolved, will prevent successful performance of required duties of this position - seek management for clarification
  • Employee may work together with other crew members or alone within their assigned buildings or areas to ensure their work is performed to established standards
  • Changes in assignments will be provided verbally or in writing by the supervisor

Special Requirements:
This position requires the ability to

  • Work in a crowded, high pressure work environment
  • Must wear safety footwear at all times in compliance with appropriate ANSI Standards
  • All custodians will be in-training during their probationary period.
  • Custodians must attend and complete classroom training in the OS1 process, tools, and chemicals - upon hire manager will provide full details

Working Conditions

Work is generally indoors, with some outdoors activities and public restrooms. Custodians may be required to work weekends and state holidays. You must be comfortable around the public and working inside as well as outdoors.

Work Schedule
Monday - Friday | 6am - 2:30pm

Customer Interaction: There will be constant interactions with members of the public, customers and coworkers.

Travel requirements: Limited to Olympia, Lacey and Tumwater areas.
