The Washington Geological Survey (WGS) is looking for an energetic team member with strong interpersonal and organizational skills, and you may be just the right fit to support us! The Survey strives to provide the best available science to the public, local governments, and tribes to inform their decision-making processes around public safety and economic vitality.

The successful candidate will work within a small team on a two-year project to help preserve the 57-year-long career of a retired geologic mapper in Washington State. The project team will create a comprehensive inventory of the retired mapper’s recent, large donation to our Survey, comprised of numerous physical samples, digital sample inventories, analyses, field notebooks, and unpublished maps. Once the project is complete, the inventory will be publicly available to support further research. Our ideal candidate is a proven team player, self-motivated, detail-oriented, highly organized, and can bring their Excel wizardry and problem-solving mindset to the project.Responsibilities:
  • Assist the project team in the design and creation of an Excel-based inventory database structure to adequately capture the information about the donated materials
  • While at the Survey’s warehouse, catalog rock samples from the collection into a warehouse inventory.
  • Re-box and re-label samples for long-term storage as samples are cataloged and cross-checked.
  • Assemble metadata records for all physical records, including samples, field notebooks, reports, draft geologic maps, and analytical results in the new Collection Database.
  • Ensure that all samples contained within the Collection Database have a geographic location associated with them
  • Perform quality control analysis on the newly constructed and updated datasets
Required Qualifications: 
  • Bachelor’s degree, that includes either coursework in math or statistics
    OR equivalent education and/or experience in analysis, research, or statistics will substitute for the above.
  • Intermediate proficiency in Microsoft Excel.

Special Requirements and Conditions of Employment:
  • Approximately 50% office setting within the first floor of the Natural Resources Building WGS open office space and 50% small warehouse setting, located at the Webster Facility in Tumwater, WA. The facility has two separate bays and contains large, three-level shelving, where most materials are palleted and accessible by ladders. The position will work according to a safety plan to ensure safe working conditions.
  • Frequent travel to the Survey’s Core Storage Warehouse in Tumwater, WA will be required. Possible for overnight travel to conferences/workshops, as needed and appropriate.
  • A valid unrestricted driver’s license and have two years of driving experience. This position requires driving as an essential function. Finalists and/or interview candidates will be asked to provide a driving record from all states in which they have held a license during the past three years.
