About the Washington State Employee Assistance Program:
The Employee Assistance Program (EAP) supports public employees and/or family members to help identify and resolve personal concerns that may affect job performance. EAP is the behavioral and mental health expert in the workplace; therefore, assistance to both employees and employers serves to maximize state government’s ability to serve the people of Washington, per the Enterprise Services mission.

As an Employee Assistance Program Counselor, you will provide support and assistance to both employers (supervisors/management/HR) and to employees and their family members in identifying and resolving concerns in order to promote a productive and healthy workforce.

The work associated with this position will be performed predominately through a hybrid work structure of onsite and remote work. Onsite presence will vary based on business and operational need. Employees must reside in Washington state and within a reasonable distance to the Thurston County worksite to respond to workplace reporting requirements

Some of what you will enjoy doing:
  • Direct Client Services, including delivery of professional, solution-focused, culturally-relevant EAP clinical services:
    • Clinical Assessments: Problem identification, short-term problem-solving, and providing resources and referrals within 1-3 counseling sessions, and occasional follow up and case management) for employees and their adult household members. 
    • Organization Consultation: Behavioral health assistance to workplace managers, supervisors, and HR through consultation, coaching, and problem-solving, with the focus of managing the troubled employee, enhancing the work environment, and improving employee performance and wellness.
    • Incident Stress Management: Triage, crisis intervention, and on-site debriefings following traumatic events and losses.
    • Crisis Intervention: Provide crisis intervention when callers or walk-in clients are in distress and need de-escalation and resources.
  • Education and Awareness Support:
    • Collaboration: Provide subject matter expertise to EAP Education and Awareness Specialist in the development of content.
    • Presentation and Webinar Delivery: Provide facilitation/co-facilitation support to EAP Education and Awareness Specialist during webinar and presentation delivery.


Required Qualifications:
  • Master’s Degree in Social Services, Psychology, Counseling, Social Work, or related field from an accredited college or university whose accreditation is recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA); AND
  • Three (3) years of professional experience and training in mental health and counseling, preferably in an employee assistance program; AND
  • Licensure at the advanced level or certification in one of the following fields:
    • Psychology
    • Clinical Social Work
    • Marriage and Family Therapy
    • Professional Counseling or Mental Health Counseling
    • Chemical Dependency or Substance Use Disorder Professional

**Note: Required Occupational Specific Qualifications. Professional experience noted above should include the following areas:
  • Counseling: Conduct clinical assessment and develop individualized assistance plans based on findings of assessment to address identified problems, effectively uses a variety of tools and methods to encourage adults to change behavior and/or overcome physical/emotional barriers, provide referrals to employees and their families for diagnosis, treatment, and/or community resources, develop follow-up plans. 
  • Training: Effectively communicate information for the purpose of having others learn, understand, and apply specific principles, techniques, or information.
Preferred/Desired Qualifications:
  • Certified Employee Assistance Professional (CEAP)
  • Training and experience in Incident Stress Management (ISM)
  • Knowledge of or experience in assessing and treating substance abuse and addiction issues
  • Computers: Proficiency in Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook
  • Consultations: Experience with providing consultation to supervisors and managers regarding employee work performance, behavioral issues, and underlying personal problems which may be contributing factors, and effective partnering to help managers and state employees identify, evaluate, and resolve complex or sensitive issues, problems, and service needs.
  • Analysis: Use data and information in a clear and rational thought process to assess and understand issues, evaluate options, form accurate conclusions, and make decisions.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment.

Conditions of Employment:
