The BIIA is a medium-sized state agency under the administration of three full-time Board Members. It is independent from the Department of Labor and Industries (L&I). The BIIA hears appeals from decisions made by L&I in several areas. The three principal types of appeals are:
- Industrial insurance (workers' compensation).
- Safety citations under the Washington Industrial Safety and Health Act (WISHA).
- Employer Premiums (Tax Assessment and Classification).
Duties include, but are not limited to:
- Typing and proofing legal orders, forms, and correspondence.
- Verifying proper citation of case law and statutes, reviewing quoted materials for accuracy, and providing substantive review of findings of fact and conclusions of law.
- Processing Orders.
- Maintaining electronic case files and databases.
- Serving as the Lakewood Office receptionist. Attendance at the Lakewood office is required when in-person proceedings are scheduled.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Option 1: High school diploma or equivalent and four (4) years of experience in a legal environment in support of an attorney, administrative law judge(s), industrial insurance appeals judge(s), review judge(s) or equivalent.
Option 2: One year of experience as a Legal Assistant 2 (formerly Legal Secretary 1) in WA State Government.
Option 3: A two-year degree in Legal Secretary Studies, Paralegal Studies or related field and two (2) years of legal office experience.
Option 4: A bachelor's degree and two (2) years of legal office experience.JOB SPECIFIC COMPETENCIES
- Ability to perform duties at a senior/specialist level.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Exceptional proofreading, editing and typing skills.
- Ability to perform legal research.
- Ability to properly cite case law, regulations and statutes.
- Ability to assist customers regarding inquiries, complaints or problems.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Word and Outlook.
- Ability to operate a multi-line telephone and general office equipment (i.e., computer, copy machine, etc.).
- Knowledge of workers' compensation.

Notes- HYBRID POSITION:
- The official duty station is the Lakewood office however, remote work is an option. The successful candidate must reside in Washington state upon hire.
- In-person work in the Lakewood office may be required approximately 2-10 times per month. The schedule for in-person work will vary and is dependent upon scheduled in-person proceedings. The office is accessible by motor vehicle or public transit.
- This position is included in the bargaining unit represented by the Washington Federation of State Employees.
