The Office of Radiation Protection (ORP) is working to ensure the public is protected from harmful effects and unnecessary exposure to ionizing radiation.

 

This position links to the organizational mission to protect public health in three ways.

 

  • Identify, track and remove radiation hazards.
  • Review requests for radioactive materials uses.
  • Assure licensee compliance with the radiation safety rules and license conditions.

 

This is a full-time, permanent Radiation Health Physicist 2 (RHP2) position working out of the Tumwater, WA duty station. Telework (mobile work) is currently expected, it is anticipated that the incumbent would be expected to be at the Tumwater duty station for work activities 1-2 days quarterly, and fieldwork is expected 3-4 days a month.

Required Qualifications 

Experience defined below may have been gained through paid or unpaid activities. Please ensure any relevant experience defined below is outlined in your cover letter, resume, and/or applicant profile. 

 

Option 1: One year as a Radiation Health Physicist 1 

 

OR


Option 2:  Two (2) years in an official radiation control program.

 

NOTE: An official radiation control program is a radiation control program that is large enough to devote full-time staff to the review and control of the use of ionizing radiation with the intent of limiting and reducing human exposure to radiation.

 

Computer Skills:  Experience should include practical skills in MS Excel for spreadsheet tasks, database management, MS Word for document creation and formatting, and Microsoft Outlook or similar email systems for electronic correspondence.

 

 

Desired Qualifications  

  • A Bachelor's degree in radiological health, radiation safety, health physics, or related field.
  • Experience with federal (NRC Regulations) and state (chapter 246) radioactive material requirements. 
  • Experience with radioactive licensees within any NRC Agreement State.

Conditions of Employment/Working Conditions

 

With or without accommodation, I am willing and able to:

  • Work a full-time 40-hour work week 8 AM to 5 PM, Monday through Friday, and occasionally adjust work-schedule to meet business needs, which may include evenings and weekends. A flexible work schedule will be considered upon request and supervisor’s approval.
  • Travel statewide and out of state when necessary to perform the core functions of the position, including assigned inspections. This may require overnight or multiple nights lodging at least twelve times per calendar year.
  • Legally operate a state or privately-owned vehicle OR provide alternative transportation, and be capable of traveling long distances in both daylight and at night, and in snow and rain conditions.
  • Work in an environment where exposure to radiation is likely. 
  • Relocate or transfer objects and materials weighing up to 40 pounds with or without accommodation.
  • Participate in emergency response exercises and emergency events/high-priority assignments as assigned.
