Schedule:  A flexible/hybrid schedule is possible less than one day a week/as needed.  This position is full time, Wednesday-Sunday, with the possibility of Tuesday-Saturday upon completion of the probationary period with the occasional need to adjust work schedule and/or work additional hours as required to meet museum needs.  

Who we are:
The Northwest Museum of Arts & Culture (MAC) seeks to engage our audiences in the appreciation of art, history, and culture of the Inland Northwest and beyond, through collection stewardship, exhibitions and programs that enrich and inspire. Established in 1916, the MAC is the oldest cultural organization in Spokane, Washington, and serves over 100,000 visitors each year from around the region. The museum collections contain over 63,000 objects, including the largest known collection of Plateau tribal art and artifacts.

What you will be doing:
This public-facing role promotes our values of transparency and inclusion by fostering a welcoming environment for all visitors. You will play a critical role in advancing our mission to engage audiences in the appreciation of art, history, and culture. By overseeing admissions, retail, and café operations, you’ll ensure exceptional customer service and operational efficiency, enhancing the visitor experience. Through a focus on increasing revenue from various sources such as ticket sales, memberships, events, café, and museum store sales, you’ll contribute to the financial sustainability of the organization. Furthermore, through collaboration with museum leadership and direct reporting to the Chief Operating Officer, you’ll actively contribute to the realization of our vision to become a nationally acclaimed regional cultural center, while also playing a pivotal role in fostering the MAC as a premier workplace in the Inland Northwest.
Some of what you’ll enjoy doing includes:
  • Plan, direct, and supervise all activities of Visitor Services and museum Store operations.
  • Develop and manage budgets for Visitor Services with a focus on revenue development.
  • Revise museum floor procedures to optimize staff performance, guest experience, safety, and operational efficiency. Independently streamline Visitor Services procedures to boost operational effectiveness, while supporting the Chief Operating Officer in enhancing organizational efficiency.
  • Recruit, hire, train, instruct work, evaluate performance, check other’s work, take corrective action, or terminate staff as necessary. 
  • Plan work of subordinates and effectively communicate those plans to subordinates through various channels including in-person communications, email, and via Teams.
  • Serve as Versai software expert for staff providing training and assistance as needed.
  • Exercise independent judgment to procure unique, high-quality, mission-related merchandise for the museum store, maximizing revenue, enhancing the visitor experience, and supporting the museum's mission. Research gift and museum store trends to source educational items that generate interest.
  • Collaborate with the Marketing department to develop new MAC logo-branded merchandise.
  • Utilize Versai to track and analyze merchandise sales data, informing strategic purchasing decisions.
  • Ensure accuracy in inventory records, sales reports, and fiscal-year-end inventory analysis, reconciling any discrepancies.
  • Provide necessary documentation, such as invoices, packing slips, and monthly reports, to the accounting department, including details on taxable and non-taxable sales as well as sales reports for consignment vendors, to facilitate timely and accurate Sales Tax filing and payment of vendors.
  • Foster community engagement by supporting local artisans and featuring their products in the store, while managing consignment contracts for local artists art.
  • Establish rental pricing structures in consultation with relevant stakeholders.
  • Explore, evaluate, and maintain catering contracts, considering exclusivity and alcohol service regulations according to liquor license laws.
  • Familiarize oneself with various liquor license types and renewal procedures, potentially coordinating with relevant personnel for annual renewals.
  • Collaborate with catering companies for event inquiries and bookings, ensuring clear communication and agreement on terms.
  • Address all inquiries regarding event hosting via email or phone, providing excellent customer service and detailed information and assistance as needed.
  • Draft Facility Agreements for all event rentals.
  • Plan, direct, and supervise all activities of Café operations, ensuring smooth functioning and excellent customer service. 
  • Recruit, hire, train, instruct work, evaluate performance, check other’s work, take corrective action, or terminate staff as necessary. 
  • Plan work of subordinates and effectively communicate those plans to subordinates through various channels including in-person communications, email, and via Teams.
  • Conduct regular financial analysis, reporting, and budget management for the Café to track sales, expenses, profitability, and implement strategies for cost savings and revenue development.
  • Collaborate with suppliers and vendors to negotiate favorable terms and ensure quality products.
  • Monitor and maintain cleanliness, organization, and safety standards in the Café and seating area in accordance with state Health Department standards, rules, and regulations.
  • Update museum-floor procedures to ensure staff efficiency, guest satisfaction, safety, and overall operational efficiency. Assist the Chief Operating Officer in refining procedures to enhance operational effectiveness.


REQUIRED:
  • Demonstrated de-escalation and customer service recovery skills.
  • A minimum of 6 years of experience as a retail manager, which includes responsibilities such as purchasing, sales, marketing, display management, and maximizing revenue. 
OR
Equivalent education/experience.

Must also have:
  • Proven track record for understanding retail trends, preferably in the gift/museum market.
  • Ability to interpret, create and maintain fiscal budgets. 
  • Proficiency with Point of Sale/Inventory software such as Altru, Versai etc. 
  • Proficiency with social media (i.e. Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, X, etc.)
  • Able to learn and understand the language and concepts of DEI culture and commit to being a part of creating and maintaining a diverse, equitable, respectful, and inclusive workplace. 
  • Demonstrate a commitment to growth, learning and self-awareness when provided training and opportunities to participate in improving our work environment.

PREFERRED:
  • Bachelor’s degree in business management or marketing.
  • 3 years of experience as hospitality manager (hotel, restaurant, museum, theater etc
  • Certified Tourism Advocate (CTA) training or equivalent professional credential.
  • Knowledge of art and artists, both regional and international. 
  • Knowledge of natural and cultural history of the Inland Northwest.
