BACKGROUND
STEM to the Future (STTF) is altering the way we address the STEM pipeline gap for
Black and Latinx students through a scalable social justice and STEAM-based curriculum. Our mission is to inspire and motivate Black and Latinx students, ages
4-13, to be creative critical thinkers who see themselves in STEAM and are thereby empowered to solve injustice and create the worlds they want and deserve. STTF creates a STEAM curriculum and experiences where our youth feel inspiration, connection, and belonging.
Our Theory and Practice (TxP) programs are student-led initiatives in which youth combine justice, STEAM, Critical Participatory Action Research (CPAR), and activism as they work together to reimagine and create the communities they want and deserve. They are guided through the process of (1) creating a clear vision for the world they want and deserve, (2) using STEAM to develop projects that support their vision, and (3) connecting with the community and grassroots organizations to build and implement their projects.
Through our direct-service programming, we equip over 2,000 youth annually in Los
Angeles to use STEAM to address unmet needs in their communities. Our goal is to build on our programming by partnering with STEAM practitioners and activists to engage youth in real-world solutions and further contribute to our existing curriculum library.
To accomplish our vision of revolutionizing how STEAM is taught to Black and Latinx
Youth, STTF is expanding our STEAM Residency program, which pairs TxP youth with STEAM practitioners and activists. STTF’s STEAM Residency program provides
Black and Latinx youth with the freedom to lean into the transformative power of examining the world around them and continuing to ask “why?”
This Request for Proposals seeks Black and Latinx STEAM professionals and creatives to lead our TxP students through project-based learning experiences. We are looking to collaborate with enthusiastic, passionate, individuals who are committed to helping students reimagine and create the
communities they want and deserve.

AN INVITATION
This request for proposals invites STEAM professionals and creatives to lead our
TxP students through project-based learning experiences that are aligned with their professions. We are looking to pair STEAM residents with students in two programs:
Brick by Brick and Bloom.
The Bloom Initiative is a creative design class for 4th-6th grade students. Students learn a variety of skills such as graphic design, photography, and storytelling. Past
Bloom students have learned how to do screen-printing and have run a pop-up shop.
Brick by Brick is a health justice program for 1st-3rd grade students. Students learn about horticulture as they cultivate an urban farm and learn about the ways it benefits the community and environment. Past Brick by Brick students have learned how to cook and have created a cookbook.
STEAM residents will lead a two hour class, once a week for one semester or the whole year. TxP classes will begin on September 14, 2022.
If you have a passion for the youth, recognize their collective genius, and are ready to help them pave the way to liberation through STEAM, you are invited to submit a proposal. We are prioritizing creatives, activists, and practitioners who are Black,
Latinx, who have a background in environmental justice or creative design, and live or work in the same communities as our students (see additional criteria below).
Participating STEAM residents will have the following benefits:
- Residents will receive $3,750 for 15 sessions
- Intrinsic rewards of supporting youth that are working to create change and contributing to the greater good of the community
